    Question When?

About what age do the pups stop putting everything in their mouths when they go outside? She puts twigs, clumps of dirt, leaves and even little rock pebbles in her mouth constantly and I have to watch her like a hawk and take them out of her mouth. Will this get better in time? She is almost 10 weeks. I am aware that labs are mouthy. Just wondering when it will get better. Or will it?

It seemed as if my hand was constantly in Polly's mouth as a pup! It will improve, but it takes time. Sounds like you are being as careful as I was; it seems never ending, but eventually she'll get it!

Polly would take lids off milk jugs (less than 1 second if I put it on the floor) and then hid the lid in her cheek!

On the plus side, she never bit on my hands. . .!!

I don't know that it every completely goes away. The best advice I can give you is to teach "leave it" and "drop it" as soon as possible.

What, you mean this stops? Bobby is 10 months and still does this albeit, less often. The "drop" and "leave it" commands are invaluable.

Yes believe it or not it does stop. Our last lab stopped but don't remember how old she was. (it's been so long)

Depends on the dog. Usually around the magical age of three.

Mocha does this, too. Almost 11 months and counting! If I see that look in his eye, I'll tell him to leave it. This works best. If he gets it in him mouth, then drop it. He's not very good with drop it, so Open is next. On a side note, I taught him open inadvertently. Whenever he had something in his mouth and wouldn't drop, in frustration I'd say "open your mouth" and (gently) pry his jaws apart and take out whatever the offending object was. Now, I put my hand on his chin and say "open" and he usually does.

When we brought home our puppy, someone here told me that teaching drop it as soon as possible would be a lifesaver. Boy were they right. His 'off' (our 'leave it') isn't as strong, but he's sure good at dropping things the moment we say it. Actually, he KNOWS the things that we always tell him to drop, so he'll usually do it the minute he notices that we noticed him pick it up. He's really good at that 'oops, I shouldn't have let them see me do that' face and he'll reluctantly drop whatever it is. It's kind of funny.
