Just the stuff you probably have in your cupboard already. Plain white vinegar. You do still need to keep the counters clean and put leftover foods away of course. Good luck.

Our fridge is at the entrance to our kitchen. If I know puppy is in the kitchen and it's too quiet I sneak into the doorway (puts me beside the fridge, and a pup with its paws on the counter has their back to me). If they're surfing I smack the side of the fridge hard with an open hand... makes a sudden loud BANG that startles them and sends them flying off the counter and looking for me or hubby. When they pop down and spin towards the kitchen doorway and see me, I immediately praise, call them to me, and praise again. I've raised several dogs (see signature) and I think the most its ever taken was three bangs to break a pup of the habit.

I have a spray bottle of apple cider, works on a multitude of behaviors:firewood next to the fireplace is Anthony's playground, I spray it and the countertop in the kitchen. He hates it, rolls around like we tazed him.

Thanks! I will definitely be trying that this weekend. And yes, we do keep the counters clean and try our best to put the food away when we are done cooking/eating.

Thanks! I'll give this a try if the vinegar doesn't work!

Similar to what I do except I sneak outside and watch, as soon as the Dog starts concentrating on something I bang and screem through the window. Only takes a couple of tries.

Yes, i have tried it a couple times and so far no counter surfing! I even put it on the coffee table in the living room when I am snacking when she is in there and it works too. Thanks!

Milo seems to like the taste of vinegar and bitter apple so it looks like I have a problem on my hands. I caught him several times and made a loud noise to startle him and them praise when he comes over to me but that only works for a few minutes and he's right back to counter surfing. He knows the "off" command but, like a rebellious teenager, he gives me that look like "I choose not to obey your silly command human". He is definitely a strong minded dog and has his own opinions on things.

Mine is strong minded too! I have to laugh at the "just a stern 'no' when you catch him in the act" advice. I am jealous. They must have easy puppies! Mine is a cheeky little spawn of Satan. I've caught him in the act so many times and he'll get down but right back up the minute I turn my back.

I will try the vinegar trick!
