I was going to ask/ hope that your breeder would have a potty area already in use but it doesn't look that way. This could make potty training more difficult for you since it appears they can go wherever they want right now. But maybe I am missing something...

Many of us use a kiddy pool w/ the woody pellets set up in the pen w/ the pups. Mine actually start to use a newspaper area before they are 3 wks, and by 4 wks old, are already quite solid on going on a tray w/ wood pellets (newspapers had been used to start with but lab puppies get creative w/ anything they can carry/drag/tear up, lol!). So much easier when started young.

    Beautiful puppies!

My first thought was similar to Anne's. When puppies have a clean place to eat, sleep and play, and a dirty area (aka potty box) to pee and poop in, they learn to be clean. I work with my puppies at 2-3 weeks, when they start looking for a place to pee and poop outside the nest area, and give them a small boot tray with a pee pad in it, then we quickly progress to pellets and a larger tray. By 4-5 weeks they are 99% at using the potty box. Puppies learn to "hold it" long enough to get to the potty box instead of just peeing and pooping where they are, it is also easier to keep the puppies area, the puppies clean, and to get soiled waste out of the potty box quickly too. I send home a small bag of pellets with the puppy, and they potty train really fast.

Here is a picture so you have an idea what I mean.

That picture brings back memories ... we did the same thing with our pups, and Cookie used to fall asleep in the potty box on occasion. She’s a special one, LOL.

friends just took home their new golden pup (they've seen the litter grow up-another friend is breeder) and they were soooo happy to find their new boy already heading to the door to go out to potty on the 1st day! Breeder has the same set-up with the pellets in a tray, and sends a few pellets home with the puppy people. Put the pellets in the desired potty area, and pup already has an idea where to go! Spoke with her yesterday, all the other puppy people had let her know how the 1st 2 nights had gone, and most also mentioned the potty training.

Thanks for all the response. I didn't know to ask and don't know the setup inside the house. We spent all the time outside with pups and mom and grandma watching. I'm ready for the challenge.

    From my experience.

    1) The plastic crate made gigi nutz all night and she pooped . She wanted to sleep and lounge all night. Pee and Poop everywhere.
    2) Changed to the metal see through and that seemed to have the trick. She sleeps in our room. When we yell bed time at kids and go to the bedroom to tuck and put them to bed. SHe now runs to our room and waits for me to move the crate from living room to bedroom.
She had a lot of howling episode in the crate all night . again in the plastic enclosed crate.
    3) She sleeps from 9 - 5.30 ...so I am up at 5.30 to take her out. SOme night like last she needed a 1 am poop break.
    4) She was very nippy and crazy with kids. 2 weeks in she is getting better. Teach her to bite toys and stuff other than humans.
    5) Teach fetch, I am a little sleep deprived as I take her out at 5.30 , feed her at 6 am , we go for a 15 minute walk. She cannot walk too far but its good for leash manners to get this going. I do 2 walks every day.
    5) Play fetch for 1/2 hr. then she poops again. then chills till wife and kids wake up.
    6) Howls when she is crated during the day when my wife has to goto grocery store , drop the kids etc
    7) Expose to more people - we camp a lot so this is something she is doing real good because she is being pet by kids and adults at campgrounds. she meets new dogs.
    8) We did pads and then this time we just paper on some night when she has a belly upset and then cleaning accidents and telling no has started to work. The wife said she comes over and barks for poop indication .pee still learing.
    9) Have fun. I have had other breeds and the labs are fantastic addition. I was told a lab is not a good watch dog. We dog sit another great watchdog and she seemed to have learned crates from that dog and also to bark when people come to our door. She is ofcourse wagging her tail and want to be pet but no more do not care attitude. gives us a warning bark.

good luck, we also teach kids to be the tree not the turkey when she jumps and nips. so rough months but she is a sweety.

Thanks for sharing. I have one week to go until we pick up Violet. I talked to breeder and they have the same setup as described above. Pop area in closed area. Got a lot of stuff yesterday. Will post pics when I get new ones.
