    Leash training call for help

I know Paisley is still very young but she is already a puller with the leash. She is a brilliant pup so far. she can lay, sit, crawl ,roll over, and high five... any good tricks on teach a 10 week pup manners on the leash?? should i wait till she is older?

    You can start now.

When on leash you can call her back to you, say her name and 'touch' and have her touch the palm of your hand with her nose and her reward will be a treat you can either dispense to her directly or drop on the ground. Time it so that she gets the treat right when she touches your hand. You can mark it with a 'yes' when she touches you as well.

You can also just stop moving when she pulls. When she sits or comes back to you then step forward again. Even with a sit I will still call my dogs back to me before we start moving again.

You can also just move in a different direction every five or so steps to keep her attention on you.

Some dogs get really excited and can get ahead of you, so anticipate that and prevent it by walking a step or two then asking for a sit. The sit puts you in control.

At ten weeks she is going to be pretty distracted, wanting to explore the world so I would allow her that. Don't make your walks too structured but I think a couple good short training sessions a day are good for dogs of any age. You want to start good manners now, so that you don't have issues with a grown dog later, but remember to allow your puppy time to be a puppy. It's a balance but I am sure you will sort it all out just fine. Paisley sounds like a real rockstar!

    Good luck!

    Everything in the post above!

There are two ways I approach walking Thor with training:

I have a standard route around the block that I'll do when I want to focus on the training part of walking on a leash (wait, watch me, heel, etc). He knows that loop and is less tempted by new smells, dogs, and people. He'll be an angel on the leash when we take that route, heeling nicely by my side, sitting and waiting when we reach a curb, and calmly looking to me when one of our known neighbors or neighbor dogs is outside. We had to walk this loop MANY TIMES before he got those behaviors and stopped pulling. I used a lot of the techniques described above.

When I just want to walk him and let him explore the world, I try to go down a new street. A lot of the training behaviors I'm working on go out the window when a new scent or place distracts him, but I'm much more tolerant in those locations. We'll still work on his skills, but I know that everything is just so new and exciting for him that it's going to be harder.

I agree with all the tips above. At 10 weeks we did more exploring than structured walks but agree it's a great time to work on name recall and basic leash manners. When Mara was a little older (maybe 13 or 14 weeks) we started using an Easy Walk harness to help with the pulling and it immediately changed the way she walks. And while she almost never pulls now, we still use it for her at 10 months old as it just puts her in a good walking mindset! Good luck with Paisley!

I always did the u-turns with chili on the leash if he started pulling...matter of fact, I just started doing them again because he pulls my wife around the block, but with me he is fine...I want my wife to be able to "want" to walk her dog, so more training even tho I thought I had this taught already.
