Ok.. I have had no sleep.. partially from menopausal insomnia to Amie's barking to be let out of the crate at precisely 3:30 am. She sleeps solid from 9 pm to 2:30.. then she barks to go out.. I take her down.. she pees and poops. Then quietly back up where she sleeps quietly until 3:30 AM... Sophie sleeps by our bed in full view of the crate on her blanket and quilt. Amie sees her and wants out. I Have tried to let her out to see if she lays quietly.. she is 17 weeks. NOPE... we start tugging on Sophie's ears and jowls.. and begins to play. I put her down stairs in the crate.. she promptly barks until 5 am. She is in the crate from 7 am til about 11 .. dad lets her and Sophie out during his break.. then he is back home at 3:30.. after that... Sophie and Amie.. play and play and play until 9 pm... Amie may have a quick nap around 7 pm. Amie does a lot of barking during the play time... she also barks when she wants out making full eye contact with us while she walks to the door. This is her I need to go potty bark. Then she barks because she wants to eat and KNOWS dinner time.... She also barks at breakfast... knows it time to eat. We don't need clocks.. we have AMIE... When Sophie was a pup.. she had no other pup to play with.. she never barked until adult hood. We have been spoiled... I hope AMIE stops.. we do redirect her from barking to putting her attention on earning treats.. chasing her toys... she is a better retriever than Sophie...She brings it back...lol.. please give me advise from our vocal girl....The weekends are different.. she is not in her crate and on the boat or playing non stop all day with us.... she will then sleep until after 5 am. I just need advise for the work days.. you know.. we do have to work in order to provide our princesses all their wishes...lol

Um, well, maybe you should buy LOTS of lottery tickets, perhaps that will take care of the work problem!

Try putting Amie in the downstairs crate after her potty break and do not respond to further barking until it is time to get up. It may take some time but she should eventually figure it out. I would also start anticipating behavior that she is currently training YOU to. If you take her out before she barks and ignore her barking for meals until she settles life will be much easier for you in the future. You are going to have a problem on your hands if your little stinker thinks she can continue to boss you around! I have a bossy girl so I know how bad this can actually get, lol!

At 17 weeks, she should be able to hold it all night. I would try taking her out for one last outing right before bed to make sure she is empty, then crate her and ignore her.

Sass was like this, and because she sleeps in my daughter’s room at night and she needed her sleep we opted for a citronella bark collar. Worked like a charm, and she didn’t need it for a while, but lately started barking again before we were all ready to get up because she wanted to leave my daughters room and come cuddle with us on the big bed. Both cute and annoying at the same time so she has been wearing it again.

LOL ... she got her name because she wouldn’t stop vocalizing on the way home from the vet hospital where she was born. She was hungry and wanted out of the cardboard box, LOL. My daughter told her to be quiet and when she wasn’t, my daughter said she was being “sassy”. And it stuck.

Hi- hopefully your pup has outgrown the barking but if not- it may help if you haven't already done this- but i have 2 or 3 special toys i give my Sasha at bedtime for her crate and she only barked for a few minutes after getting used to being in there- unless she makes a mess- which is super RARE- then it's like a screech fest. But sometimes they're just not tired and want company or get bored. When i had my Shepherd pup- he always woke up with the sun and would talk to himself- not bark (it was cute but annoying) i'd yell Quiet from my room and gave him a "safe" chew toy to keep him busy. It worked like a charm. He grew up on a farm so i also tried putting a towel over his crate to keep some of the light out... Good luck. He never did come to understand weekends- but as he matured HE was the one who enjoyed sleeping in...
