OK - thank you all - I feel better. I was worried maybe something was wrong with him that he could not hold it. About to go to a late work meeting and will feed him half - throw the ball a bit and cross my fingers!

I wouldn't worry either. Our Rosie turned 2 in August. 2 weeks ago my husband had to go away on business so that left me walking her after 10 PM. I was so tired and after 10 minutes she wouldn't poop even though I knew she had to go. I called it a night knowing there was a possibility I would wake up to find poop in the kitchen and sure enough I did.

I did not get upset knowing that it was my fault.

Another don't worry about it.....everybody does what they can, I don't like to leave Rocco unless I know he's gone, but I don't do the 9-5 thing anymore, so that helps a lot. Stay with a schedule if possible.

Just back to add, if Barley can't handle the odd change in schedule can you put him in a pen? Me, I'd prefer a pen over a crate. I don't want my dog to try to hold on longer than he wants, that's not good for him (or us, if you gotta go, go) And if he does go anyway then he's stuck in a poopy crate. Mine picked a part of the pen away from the crate, even when little, to pee or poop in. Of course he might try to hold on in the crate too.

Another here that agrees-poop happens to everybody. Dakota is 12 now and always always always I have expected that if she was thrown off schedule or had to go and no one was there-I dont expect her to never have an accident. I also agree with eh crate thing-crate for too long or out of ordinary time frame & a dog will be stuck in a crate with poop and I dont want to do that to a dog. I let them free in the house and if something happens I deal with it.
