Maybe he is just so regular that he couldn't handle the change? I think he tried to be considerate by choosing a room you don't use much, or he doesn't use it.
Well - let me preface by saying that Barley IS growing up. He is more mellow - thank god - and does pretty well with less walking and more time at home alone. He is even getting better about the man in my life.
But last night - we had an earlier evening out and left the house at 4 - getting home at 9. I fed him before I left and threw the ball for him a bit in the back yard. (I do usually walk him again in the evening.) When we got home - we noticed a smell and saw that Barley had pooped in the guest room. (The one room in the house he never goes into.) He has NEVER pooped in the house. I know that his routine was a bit off - but he is over 2 now - should I be concerned that there may be something wrong with him? Or is he just a perpetually immature toddler?

i wouldn't get too over analytical over a little mistake like that. life happens. Maybe he just really had to go. Maybe crate in the future if you have to leave at an odd time when he normally has to poop or split the meal to a bit before you leave (or as you leave) and the other when you get back.

If you fed him and then exercised him...but didn't take him out to potty....yeah, his system just got a bit ahead of schedule.

yeah, not a big deal. If they eat and then exercise and then stay in on an 'off' schedule, not unexpected.

Some dogs do not do well with schedule change. My yellow Lab is similar. However, because I am not much of a schedule person, he is not as bad as many I have seen. I have dogsat for friends who have very regimented schedules and their dogs were beside themselves with any change. I have a friend whose dog cannot handle routine change. Working dogs/field Labs are typically worse about this. It's something to consider when choosing a puppy.

Its just some poop, goes along with having a dog. I tend to keep mine on a consistent schedule so they are pretty predictable, and I normally wait for all of them to pee and poop before i leave them for 4 plus hours. I have been late to work waiting for one of them to poop and its almost always a guarantee that poop will happen after eating and some running around
No need to worry, accidents happen. I also do what Tanya suggested and only feed half there dinner if we leave early on the weekends or something and then feed the rest when we get home. I never feed a full meal if it isnt time
