    Strange house training accident

So yesterday I was playing tug-o-war with my 4 1/2 month old puppy. Not sure where everyone's stance is on this, but my puppy kindergarten teacher said it was fine, and he loves it. Anyway, we were playing and he was really growling and getting kinda crazy. I played along for a minute, then made him "give". He's still not great with "give" but eventually he did. He's not aggressive at all, just a lot of growl. So after we were done, about a minute later out of no where he started peeing right there in the middle of the living room. I took him outside really quick where he finished. He's been potty trained since he was 10 weeks old and if he needs to go, he goes straight to the door. I read somewhere that puppies aren't truly house trained until 6 months old, but this seemed really weird to me. Was he just overly excited from playing? Wonder why he didn't just go to the door like always? Thanks!

Sounds pretty normal. Did you ever get laughing so hard when having a good time with your friends you thought you might pee your pants? Puppies are the same. They can have such a good time they pee their pants. They forget the house training for that short time.

Tug is fine in my books. Done properly, which it sounds you are, it teaches them self control. He must give up the tug when you say so and it sounds like he does. I have heard cautions to not tug too hard when they still have their baby teeth.

I wouldn't worry about it - it just accident because he was excited My Barney was doing that from time to time till he was about one year old & Shelby was a bit better ie accidents happened till she was about 10 months old

He had to go, held it, got excited, forgot. Just like a little kid. Expect this to happen until he's anywhere between 9 months and 12 months. Some are better than others. Just don't get complacent with taking him out after sleep, play, and regularly in general especially if he's drinking a lot due to heat or high activity.

Definitely like a kid, who is more interested in playing than bodily functions. Happens. Definitely good suggestion regarding tug of war with puppy teeth.

The same thing happened with Molly last weekend. She was in the living room playing when the urge hit. So she went. She hasn't peed in the house in at least 2 months, maybe more. Although I think I jinxed myself. I had just mentioned to hubby a few days before that she was doing great with either letting us know when she had to go, or using the doggie door. Stupid Karma!
