I'm so sorry for your loss. Sweet Dakota had a wonderful life and you gave her the best send off. Until you meet again, she will watch over you and be with you in spirit.

I miss her so much. I honestly cry shamelessly over my dogs....
Thanks again guys, I'm grateful for your support.

I've been away for a few days and just saw the threads. I am so, so sorry. It's clear how much you love your sweet girl and how hard it is to say goodbye.

Thank you everyone. I gotta say I thought that after losing Montana this would somehow be easier or maybe less shocking to me or...something. but that isn't so. Back then Dakota brought comfort I guess because for one she was my soul dog and two she was park of the original two. China is not bringing much comfort, not that I love her less but she is acting way different and it hurts to see. I simply cannot afford another dogs vet bills especially since China is already 10 and I have yet to pay off the huge sums already...She has to be an only dog.

Last night I awoke several times either from crying in my sleep or just because I couldn't sleep well. If I awoke and wasn't already crying the empty spot next to me and the feeling in the air- of her not being with me- brought a wave of stinging tears and a sick feeling. In all of our time together I spent 6 nights away from her. Three nights once to take a short vacation to Florida and the others when I had my daughter.
This morning was awful. I stepped out of bed and quickly got my robe on to take China outside. The cool air felt good at first until it hit me. An early fall feeling in the air would normally send me into walk mode because fall is a time I love to walk with Dakota, it's cool enough where you need a sweater but perfect dog weather. The tears came fast and hard right there in the yard. Inside getting China's breakfast through the blur. This is how it will be for a b it I guess. Every first without her will hurt. 13 years is a long time. She meant so much to me.
I'm really grateful you guys understand.

Hang in there...you need to move through this. For me, after Tanner died, it was meal time (both breakfast and dinner) that gave the hardest reminders, because when he was healthy, it was his greatest joy. My fondest memories are taking both my dogs out on hikes on cold New England days and then making them a special dinner. Tanner would go nuts anticipating dinner and within an hour of eating they would both be snoring. It was the best.

You did the right thing. Hang in there.

I cant thank you enough or your kind words. I am seeing now that yes indeed it was the right thing. In fact in hindsight there were subtle hints pointing towards this, a much more dangerous issue than the arthritis I had thought was causing her "some discomfort" . Its still just such a shock. And its gonna take time.
