    Archie's Gone

Today we had to make the horrible decision. Archie has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. This was very sudden and unexpected.

Two days ago Archie half stumbled on the deck stairs, like not getting his paw all the way on the stair; he did not fall down. He was tender in that paw for a day and then back to normal, chasing squirrels. Last night he was a little mopey. This morning he had limited control over his right hind leg. He did go out and pee and came in and ate then settled down on his bed. I was waiting until his vet opened to get him in. An hour later he lost bowel control and vomited; it was apparent he had to go to the E-vet, even less function in the leg. Chat with the vet and he was concerned about a spinal problem, probably disc. X-rays were taken then the bomb fell. Some vertebra did not look right and a mass was found on his spleen. Histiosarcoma was the prime suspect. Although no specific metastasis was seen, the problem in the spine now was very ominous. The group’s oncologist was holding clinic there today and he took a look, did an ultrasound and the prognosis was very grim. The options, immediate surgery to remove the splenic mass with its inherent recovery along with Archie not being able to ambulate or letting him go. After a long discussion with both vets, it was decided to let him rest in peace rather than put him through what would probably be a surgery that would accomplish nothing as far as a cure or even some quality of life time.

We’re devastated, so unexpected. I was thinking a broken bone. My sweet, challenging, fur shedding, smiling, loving, protective, and making us laugh out loud boy is gone. Not sure of his birthday but we believe he was 9 Once he met you, you were a friend, someone to share his kisses with, he could not hold his licker. He was a lover of paper of all kinds which he consumed every chance he got. My protector from evil squirrels and invading birds who dared try to eat at the feeder or bathe in the bird bath.

This is the first time in many years there are no paws in the house. Over the past 15 or so years we have had to say goodbye to Patch, Potion, Melody, Bandit, and Mardi. He will be in grand company. This tears our hearts out. I’m not sure I can do this again.

Until we meet again at the bridge sweet Archie. We miss you so much already.

Fran this was the last thing I expected, and my heart sank when I saw this post. I was almost afraid to open it. My heart goes out to you. Archie's life took a complete turn for the better when you took him in. I'm sure in his mind the time he spent with you were the best times of his life. Everyone here knows what you did for him, and there is no doubt in my mind you truly changed his life. We all love our dogs, but in my mind, you go above and beyond. If there were ever such a thing as a doggie angel, you are it. I thank you for what you do for these dogs. You're the best.

Run free sweet, handsome, loving Archie. You will indeed be missed.
