    My Beautiful Boy Yukon

It is with sadness that I have to post in here again for the 2nd time in the last four years. I let Yukon go on Tuesday 3/12/19 with an in home visit from his vet in my NH country home. Yukon and Tanner were so good together so it's truly the end of an era. It's hard to believe that Tanner's younger brother and my baby was put to rest this week at almost 12 years 4 months old. Where does the time go?

Yukon was a pretty healthy athlete for most of his life up until about 2 1/2 years ago, where he acquired a cervical spine issue. There was no obvious injury that I'm aware of, but he was pretty active and could have been from repetitive jumping or something genetic, but I really don't know. His life changed to a new normal when this started happening, but he was still happy and able to do most things. We tried all the therapies during this time and Eastern medicine and Western medicine, massage, laser, PT, water treadmill, adequan injections, neurology visits, etc. He did get better over time and was able to lead a decent life up until a couple months ago.

Yukon had started to really show his age in the last few months, and the New England winter was not kind either. The spine issue escalated recently regardless of crate rest and meds. He was still able to get up and walk but would have pain with certain movements and it happened more and more frequently. His back end was also declining rapidly at this point.

After keeping a log for the last few weeks to track quality of life, I made the difficult decision this past Tuesday that enough is enough and held him in my arms while he took his last breath later that day. The euthanasia was very peaceful given how horrible of a situation it was.

Attached is a picture of Yukon in his prime!

    Thanks for reading.

I'm so sad to read this. It's the saddest, hardest but most loving thing we can do for our dogs when it's clear they're at the point Yukon reached. It sounds like you gave him a great life and every opportunity for comfort and mobility right up to the end. Rest in Peace, Handsome Yukon.

I'm so sad to hear of Yukon's passing. There is nothing harder than making the decision to put a best friend and companion to rest, but it sounds like you can seek solace in the fact that Yukon had a beautiful and active life. Hugs to you during this time.

So very sorry for your loss. You gave Yukon the ultimate gift of love, freedom from illness and pain which he could not do himself. May the many memories he gave you help you during this time of grief.

    Rest In Peace Yukon

I'm so sorry. It sounds like he enjoyed a wonderful life with you. I'm sure he knew you would always do what was best for him...to keep him comfortable and happy. You spared him unnecessary pain and fear.

    Run Free, Yukon...

I am really sorry for your loss of Yukon. I remember when you wrote about his spinal issues. He was about the same age as my Cookie.

    May he run free.
