Goodbye to Cooper the Rhodesian Ridgeback

Cooper, the last of Kimber's canine buddies from puppyhood, passed away last week. Kimber was a little over a year old when she met Cooper at the dog park. Cooper's owners were struggling because he was a determined humper, and that made him an unpopular presence sometimes. But Kimber was the one dog who loved to play with him AND put him in his place when he tried to mount her. She'd whirl around and give him either a shove or quick growl, and he'd subside for a while. Pretty soon, we were setting up doggie playdates at each other's houses because we liked how much fun Kimber had, and they liked not having to worry about his humping.

As an RR, Cooper quickly grew bigger than Kimber, ending up about twice her size, but she was always the boss in that relationship. Even after her injury, when we visited Cooper's house, she'd intentionally drink out of his water dish, grab his favorite toy, and then lay on his bed. He would just follow her around and sigh. He'd spend most of the visits trying to get her to play, which she usually agreed to do about 5 minutes before it was time to leave. But for years, we took them on walks together and they just loved each other's companionship.

Even Cooper's owners' little girl, who was just 4 when Kimber passed, remembers the bond. When saying goodbye to Cooper, she reportedly said, "And now you get to be with Kimber again."

Run free, big boy. I hope you are having fun frolicking with my baby girl again.

Run free, Cooper. It’s much easier when you have a friend at the Bridge.

RRs have just gotten popular here in the last few years. When Cookie was a puppy, there weren’t any. I think Cookie is a year younger than Kimber.

Aw gee, condolences to you and Cooper's family. It hurts close to as much when doggy friends leave as our own.
