So sorry for your loss. Rest In Peace Cooper. :-(

Our first lab Cooper (12-1/2 years old) took a turn for the worse early this morning. He was okay when we went to bed but he didn’t want to get up in bed with us. No big deal he has done that before. About 1am he woke my wife up with his heavy breathing. Done that before when he needs to go out. When he came in his breathing woke me up and I could immediately hear something wasn’t right. He has had both rear knees operated on and has been having a more difficult time getting around and getting comfortable. We gave him his pain medication and he settled down for a couple of hours. When I got to feed them his breathing was labored and he didn’t want to eat...not good. He never turns down food. We called our vet as soon as they opened and took him in. They did an ultrasound and found fluid in his abdomen. Upon further investigation the vet found a tumor on his spleen and it was bleeding. That is all we needed to hear and we made the difficult decision to ease his pain. He passed peacefully around 8:30am. We are extremely sad, our other two labs (Logan and Abby) seemed lost when we came home without Cooper. We are thankful that this happened early this morning as we are leaving Wednesday early am for a wedding back home in PA. If this happened while we were away it would have been even more devastating to us. We know he is in a better place, pain free and able to run around with Sammy, Zack and Cody who he hasn’t seen since 2010. RIP Cooper Bear....mom and dad love you!

I'm so sorry. As you say, at least it happened when you could react fast and be there with him to ease him along and comfort him. That counts for so much.
Rest in Peace, sweet boy.

I'm so sorry to read this. I know you did the right thing for Cooper. We lost our buddy Chase to a ruptured splenic tumor as well and it happened so fast and without obvious warning. As painful as it was for you, I'm glad you were there to manage it yourselves. Rest comfortably now, Cooper. I hope you're off with your pals, enjoying the chase once more.
