I think I finally have the strength to write this tribute to the best dog a little girl could have ever wanted growing up. My sweet girl Lily died at the age of 17, and we miss her so much.
Lily was a rescue, one who was abandoned twice before she came to us because of her extreme allergies. My mom met her and loved her. At Age 5, I finally got my doggy best friend. My mom truly knew that Lily was there to stay the first night we had her. Lily was eating her dinner, and my sister, a curious 2 year old goes over to her, opens her mouth, and sticks her hand inside to investigate. Lily just at there, let my sister do her thing. When she was done, lily kept on eating.
Lily was quite the handful. She was allergic to almost everything, so she was on a limited ingredient diet, prescription baths, allergy shots and oral meds, and oral steroids. No matter how much she cost us, she was the greatest dog. She loved everyone, knew when to be gentle and when to be playful.
I loved coming home from school every day to see lily, on her post at the top of the stairs, waiting for me to get there. Every day she was so happy to see me.
Lily was there when my parents divorced, when my mom was diagnosed with cancer, when my mom died. She was my rock. She would cuddle me as I cried, then lick up my tears. She was my best friend, and still to this day I cry when I see her pictures and her paw print mold.
After my mom died in 2010, Lily was never the same. She was always looking for her. I was 19 at the time, and all I could do was love my dog. Everyone was amazed when lily started to perk up, even at the age of 15.
In February of 2012 I had to make the hardest decision of my life. I had to take her to the vet to be put down. She had stopped eating, she couldnt walk too well. She wasnt happy anymore. I knew then it was time. I held her in my arms as they gave her the injections and I felt her relax. I knew that she was at peace.
I miss her as much as I did 2 years ago. My sweet girl lily, you are young again. Play with your tennis balls and chase squirrels. Keep mom company. See you on the other side of the Bridge.
