Thank you everyone. It's the hardest part about having a dog. And you second guess yourself all the time. As in, what did I miss to let me know she was so ill? Or, I should have checked on her sooner.
She was a sweet, unassuming dog, never pushy, always deferring to Abby. Well, except once when Abby got too close to her dish too soon.
She was gentle with my granddaughters, and would make them laugh, by playing tag with Abby. She'd follow Kaelyn , the oldest, everywhere. Kaelyn absolutely loved her. To the point I'd stop over their place, and the first words out of her mouth were, "Where's Jessie?" Not "hello, Grammie." She wanted that dog.
I remember bringing her home, a short 4 1/2 years ago. She kept her head on my knee as I was driving her home, just watching me with her loving eyes, and the first thing she did when she got in the house, was do a grand butt tuck run all around, found an old tennis ball, and destroyed it. Tennis balls were not allowed to live.
She was usually up for a good game of tug. My son took this photo while he was dogsitting for me:
One of my favorite videos of her playing tug by herself. I'd just brought home Abby the day before, so she's in it exploring, too.
I pick up her ashes tomorrow. Well, today. I think I'll lay her to rest under the lilac bush (tree, actually) that she loved to lie under.
