    Dear Bob,

I am so very sorry for your loss of Tanner. You gave him the best life, and at the end you let him go with dignity. Now he's at the Rainbow Bridge, healthy and without pain, where you will meet again, of that I am certain. Just like I'll see my beautiful Bess again, one day. We lost her in December 2014 and the pain is still very raw. It's a decision none of us ever want to have to make. I believe now though that they help us make that decision, together, even though at the time we may not see it that way.
    Take care
The day is over… I smile and watch you yawning
and say “Good-night, God bless, I’ll see you in the morning.”
And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I’ll rush across to greet you and we’ll stand, side by side.
I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out… then come home to be with me.
    - Colleen Fitzsimmons - RIP Bessie

Thank you all so much for your kind comments. It's comforting to communicate with people who not only have Labrador Retrievers, but who have been in my shoes or will be at some point. I just picked up Tanner's ashes and Paw Print at the Vet, so I had to re-live some of those raw, surreal emotions I was feeling last week. The Vet reiterated that the euthanasia was done in a very timely manner, which of course is best for the dog (but hard to swallow for the owners).

I also take comfort in knowing Tanner was very well taken care of and spoiled throughout his whole life. He was actually very happy his whole life up until the last three weeks or so, and then I knew the time was coming.

Bless you all for giving these incredible animals such great lives.

    -Bob

What a beautiful dog! I know that one day I will face this with my Moby who is 14 in Sept. He is on pain meds for arthritis and prednisone for masticatory muscle myotis. His hind legs are really weak - and he fell down the stairs during the first week I moved into my new house. So - now he sleeps downstairs. But I take him to the dog park almost every day with his 1 year old brother - and lift him out of the car. (I have stairs to help him get into the car.) Once he is there - he has a great time - slow - but joyful. It is hard for me to determine when to leave him behind so he does not injure himself - and yesterday we had a big day in the creek - which he LOVES but the hind legs seem a bit weaker today. It is so hard - and you did everything you could.

    RIP lovely Tanner
