We lost Lucy earlier this week. We miss her so much, the house is so quiet without her. She was a few months short of her 14th birthday.
Lucy had an unusual life as a trucker dog. We didn't mean for her to be a trucker dog, but we couldn't find work in our field, so we switched gears, bought a truck, loaded up the dog and hit the road. She adapted amazingly well; with her outgoing personality, she made friends all across this country. She schmoozed fellow truckers fueling at the next fuel island until they came over to say hello. She made friends at loading sites and offload points. She met other trucker dogs at rest areas and truck stops. She hung out with me on off duty days in cities all over; I'd lay down a blanket for her while I knit or read under a tree. If there was a local dog park within 2 miles, we were off on foot to find it, Portland, OR, Key West, Camarillo, CA, Fayetteville, NC. We walked miles and miles around cities and neighborhoods. She loved Portland, OR and Fife, WA for the endless walking we could do there.
She swam lakes in Connecticut, Maine, Georgia, Tennessee, and Colorado, some were regular spots for us. She swam on the Olympic peninsula, in the Columbia River Gorge, the Great Lakes, and the Florida Keys. She splashed in creeks from Montana to the Smoky Mountains. She walked piers in San Diego and yacht harbors in Rhode Island.
She's been to probably 80% of the military bases around the country, and there, were the best friends she'd make. So many young, enlisted people missing their family pups, loving a chance to pet a dog.
When we'd get home, she swam almost every day, and walked "her" neighborhood for as long as she wanted, until the last year or so, when I had to start limiting her swim and walk time because she would be so stiff and sore after.
Here are some pics from her life:

Oh this post is making me tear up. She reminds me of Daisy and I'm glad we got a chance to meet Lucy.
Dogs never live long enough but they make such a big impact on our lives during their short time on earth, it's impossible not to feel like a piece of your heart is missing when they cross over the bridge. Rest easy sweet girl.
Hugs to you Beth.
