Today, (sat., 3rd) I got a new electric smoker and plan on smoking about a 5.5lbs chicken. I'm thinking to smoke it up at 225 f for about 6hrs. With a pot of beans above it. Does this sound like it's long enough? I've BBQ'd before but never smoked. The closets thing to it was a goat in a pit but that's been yrs ago when my brother was alive and doing most of it. Lol

I haven't smoked any meat, well, not exactly true. I smoked a turkey on a charcoal Weber grill one time at Thanksgiving. It was not overcooked but I maybe got carried away with the amount of wood I used to smoke it- it was too, too smoky for my taste. All the recipes I looked over after seeing your question looks like you have the right idea for timing if doing it at 225 degrees, about an hour per pound is what I've seen but that seems to vary a bit. Most also say to take it out when the meat reaches 165 degrees. I use a meat thermometer frequently for meats if I can't easily tell if they're done. If it's your first smoking with this new smoker, if you have a quick read thermometer, you could check it somewhere along the way to see how close you're getting to the right temperature. I know you don't want to keep opening the door of the smoker and releasing the smoke and lowering the temp but for the first couple of attempts, checking at maybe 4 1/2 hours or so might help you see how it's coming along. Or, did your smoker come with a temperature probe built in that you stick into whatever you're smoking? That would be super helpful and I'd use that for sure.
Barry is a chef and Mr Kleb has done some smoking, I believe. Hopefully they or other experienced meat smokers will offer their expertise. Do you put any sort of dry rub or seasoning on it?
Six hours can be long enough if the cavity is empty. Did you have a meat thermometer and how did it turn out? I've only used a charcoal smoker so there's a little fiddling involved keeping the temperature steady. I use two thermometers - one in my project and another to monitor the smoker's temperature; I don't trust the built-in thermometer to give accurate readings. I usually start early just in case and if my project is done early, tent it with foil. If it's done really early, wrap it in foil, then a towel, then put it in a cooler.

We have a Traeger and still trying to figure out how long to smoke. We haven't done chicken yet. From what I read, chicken CAN dry out. You may want to opt for only a few hours on the smoke to about 140 and then finish in the oven so it stays moist.

I been smoking for more than a year. 6 hrs sounds good. Last year for Christmas I smoked 2 chicken .brined them over night and these bird were big .took around 7 hrs.
I have a electric smoker.picked up a small thermp meter I installed on the top to read temp I did make a round reflex blanket to keep the temp up and wind out while smoking in less than 50 degree temp.
I use a meet thermometer to watch the meat.
Use s aluminum wrap on the water holder so cleaning is easy.
I did make pulled pork which was amazing.
My goto is chicken wings.olive oil and masala ,smoke and finish with BBQ sauce mixed with orange soda.
Funny as I mentioned this thread my wife said pulled pork for Christmas.
Start at 12 am and finish by 11 and rest.
The meat thermometer puts pork cooked at lower than 205 where the muscles start to breakdown .so I let it go up to 205 and then rest to pulling is easy.
