    Fried Green Tomatoes?

I do not understand the hoopla about these. There's even a movie about them. The movie was good, the tomatoes, I don't get it. Every couple of decades I get overcome by all the talk going on about fried green tomatoes as gardeners just can't wait for them to ripen, or they're using up the end of season ones that will not ripen on the vine. I made the recipe at the link last night and to my mind they just are not worth the effort. Do you like them? Is there a better recipe?

I've eaten them a number of times, usually as part of a dish like eggs benedict with a FGT or a BLT made with a FGT, but they've never made me jump up and smack my lips! I've never tried making them because I usually don't fry stuff and they aren't good enough for me to abandon that. Your recipe seems pretty authentic. Did you serve them with any sort of sauce on them or just by themselves? I think whatever I've eaten them with, like the bacon or bearnaise sauce or some other sort of dipping sauce made me think they're tasty.

I served a yogurt/cucumber/dill salad dressing (Renee's, commercial, yum) as a dipping sauce. Yes, they are fried, which I usually avoid too. Oh well, at the rate I'm going I won't get the urge to try them again till at least 2028.

Frying is too messy for me to do myself, so I get them at local eateries. Like one a year, just to say I did. Lol.

I live in the south and don't eat them. I avoid most fried foods anyway.

I love 'em, but then I grew up eating them. One of my favorite ways to eat fried green tomatoes is on a BLT, but instead of ripe tomato, substitute a fried green tomato. My favorite place for this kind of sandwich is 12 Bones in Asheville, North Carolina. Here's a photo I took of their BLT last time I was there. I actually HATE fresh ripened tomatoes, but I love green ones.

Lived for years in GA and never tried them. However, cornmeal breaded yellow crookneck squash, fried, YUM!

That's too bad. I was seriously looking at that for using up some of mine and mixing it up. Never have tried green tomatoes at all.

Does anyone have any opinions on this green tomato soup? In other words, does it look like it would be worth it to try?
