You Eat Your Greens, Do You Eat Your Weed Greens?

I knew that darn purslane that tries to take over my garden and yard was edible but didn't try it till I saw how to eat it on a friend's facebook page. It's GOOD. I'm eating some in a salad for lunch right now and I have cooked it the same way I do swiss chard. It's supposed to be just full of all kinds of things that are good for you. It also has oxalic acid so not advised in great amounts for those with kidney stones. Spinach has oxalic acid too, don't know how they compare. To think I've been weeding it out all these years. We eat the weed commonly called lamb's quarters too. In our family it's called fat hens as it grew around the hen house.

Here's the site from the FB page: If You See This "Weed" In Your Backyard, Don't Pull It Out! Turns Out It's Good For You! | facebook

I think that guy may have put some other "weed" in with his purslane.

ETA: Back to add, apparently it has more omega 3 than some fish oils do so I throw some into Oban's food too. If only I could get him to just eat it where it takes over from the grass. Maybe he doesn't want to eat that for the same reason I don't.

Purslane doesn't look familiar to me. Maybe the lamb's quarters do but I don't really want to pull and eat anything out of my yard that I don't know for certain what it is. And that's aside from the dogs peeing on stuff out there.

Purslane is related to the flower portulaca and the leaves look a lot alike. Yeah, I only use the purslane that's growing in my fenced vegetable garden to eat. In my lunch salad I ate the roots too but the big ones are tough and I cut them off. It rained last night and the purslane, true to it's weedy nature, just multiplied all over and the leaves were big and plump and juicy with still small roots today.

Thank you for posting that. I've never heard of it before but am looking for an invasive plant to take over in an area that keeps being invaded by useless things.

Being the ultimate weeder, did not know this. I've been diligently pulling and throwing it out.

Hate to hear about oxalic acid in spinach. I eat tons of it in salads and have a history of kidney stones. Geez, can my diet get any more complicated.
