You can search for Lab rescues in NJ, NY and CT. You can also look into your local Lab club as sometimes breeders are looking to part with older dogs that are retired from breeding or who didn't quite cut it in the ring. Good luck!
My wife and I recently lost one of our Labs to cancer. We are trying to find resources that can be helpful in adopting another young adult or adult Lab. We have our Chocolate boy Spartacus, who is 6 and two cats. Our house has a large, fenced back yard and we have a walking service that comes in several times during the day. Any help or suggestions that anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for the information...this site appears to be only for dogs in RI. When I adopted Cleo, our dog who just passed away, it was a home to home situation and the people lived in NJ. They also brought her to our house to see the interaction in the home rather than in a neutral situation. All the rescue sites that I have seen online appear to be connected with Petfinder. My concern with that website is that most of the dogs listed are from shelters and the information that they have on them is very sparse. It would be less of a concern if we didn't have our current cats and dog. Several leads that we have had over the last few weeks are just invites to Petsmarts to see potential adoptees who have just been transported from another state and/or have just been neutered or spayed. Perhaps we were just lucky eight years ago when we adopted Cleo, however, its hard to believe that there isn't some sort of similar opportunity for home to home adoption anymore.
Some rescues only take in shelter dogs, unfortunately. The one I used to work with took owner surrenders all the time because we wanted to avoid the dog going to a shelter and we felt we could find the best match if we had access to information from the owners. Many rescues use Petfinder as a way to inexpensively have/maintain a website for their rescue, so I would not necessarily worry about that. But I understand wanting the background on a dog. You may have to do a lot of searching and talking to rescues and the process can take awhile, up to a year or more.
Does that rescue organization facilitate adoptions? If so, may I have their contact info?
I meant to say do they still facilitate adoptions......
Thank you so much for looking into a rescue. There are so many out there looking for forever homes.
I home senior dogs, mostly labs. All of mine have come from breeders ready to go to a one-on-one home for various reasons. All have been fabulous and quickly became beloved family members. Maybe this could be another source for you. A breeder may keep a pup as a show prospect but not turn out the way they hoped. A lot of these pups are in the 2 year range. Contact your closest lab club with your request and get a list of reputable breeders. Every breeder I have had gotten a dog from also had cats around so they were cat tested.
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have contacted breeders in my area, so I will see what information or suggestions I can get from that.
Have you tried looking at your local or state labrador retriever clubs? Sometimes they will have listings of older dogs available from breeders or links to a rescue that they are associated with. Older dogs from breeders will probably be more expensive than dogs being privately rehomed who did not originally come from a good breeder. Reputable breeders will generally take back one of their dogs if it cannot remain at its current home for some reason.

The Labrador Retriever Club of the Potomac has a pretty large lab rescue organization also, if it's not too far for you/them.

“Because of the dog's joyfulness, our own is increased. It is no small gift. It is not the least reason why we should honor as well as love the dog of our own life, and the dog down the street, and all the dogs not yet born. What would the world be like without music or rivers or the green and tender grass? What would this world be like without dogs?”
