"Salmon Cake" cookies

A friend sent me a recipe from a doggie dessert book for Salmon balls and I adapted it, based on things I know Java has eaten and likes and also basically halved the amounts in the recipe.

I used:

1 c. oats
2 oz. can anchovie fillets in olive oil, mostly drained and rinsed
1 egg
1/2 T parsley
dash of garlic

I mashed the anchovies and mixed them up with the other ingredients. I put little quarter-size scoops on a cookie sheet and baked them for 30 minutes and let them cool for 2 hrs. Java went crazy for them! She loves fish, anyway, and could smell it when I'd open the oven to check or turn them. I'll only give them to her sparingly (I put half in the freezer), but this is definitely encouragement to make more treats and buy fewer.

Those sound like something Kendal might like. I usually make all the treats he gets. Always nice to have another recipe to try.

Recipe Website

I've gone to a website called:

recipegoldmine.com

that has a section of pet recipes (not just dogs but cats, birds, horses etc.!!!). I've only tried one from there and that was the Carob Doggie Treats. They seemed to be a hit with Kendal. Really nice, dark brown colour. I'd like to try some of the other recipes. I'm debating trying to make dog biscuits and selling them at the farmer's market in Goderich this summer. Don't know if they would sell or not. I guess I won't know if I don't try.

I posted a recipe here in December called Liver Brownies. These are a favourite of both Kendal and Zaida (the resident feline). Zaida would actually climb into the fridge when I opened the door with the hope that she would get a treat. The Brownies also work great as training treats to.

I'll have to check out that site. I remember the liver brownie recipe, but I haven't tried it yet. Sounds like a tasty treat.

If the market there is anything like the one here, there will be people with dogs who will "eat them up."

I made the "Salmon" Cakes and they are a hit with Kendal. I didn't have any anchovies so I substituted a can of mackeral that I had. I rolled them into 1" balls and then flattened them on the cookie sheet. My next test subject will be Zaida. I'll give her one before I go to work tonight (the joys of night shift, yech!!).
Thanks for the recipe.

I'm so glad that Kendal likes them! Hope Zaida did too...

I need to make more... Java ate the last two last night (I had saved them because we brought home two puppies found to foster and I wanted to make sure she had extra-special treats for her good behavior). She was really good with them, but they gang up and yap at her and she gets a little frustrated with their sharp little teeth. She is a good little herder and nursemaid, tough.

The first one I gave Zaida, she batted around on the floor for a few seconds. That didn't last long because Kendal realized it was food and he took possession. Once she figured out that it was good food she woofed them dwon. Next batch I make will have some smaller sized one for her. I enjoy making treats for my beasties, kinda like making cookies fo kids, I guess.

I still haven't gotten around to trying the liver brownies, but on Saturday I made more anchovie cookies and also some peanut butter cookies for the pups. I modified another recipe I'd found...

1 c oatmeal
1 egg
2 Tb peanut butter
1 Tb honey

I baked them for 30 minutes and let them cool and harden in the oven for 2 hours.

Java acts like it is puppy crack! The thing I really like about using the oatmean is it makes it easy to break them up (even though they start out small) for training tidbits. Fun, fun.
