I wouldn't do shaping of two commands until I had a solid command of each. So in this example a solid "leave it" command before shaping and behavior linking with a solid "down stay" command.

Positive reinforcement as part of operant conditioning is NOT this at all and what you describe is a very cursory understanding of animal behaviorism, a bit like when we treated animals as beasts...
