My 14 year old Toby, also has LP. My Vet advised against the tie back surgery because it is so risky and usually comes with complications,

We just manage by keeping him calm and cool during the hot summer months..he seems to be much better in the cooler months like now.

I would definitely get a second opinion before putting your girl through another surgery!

I'm so sorry to hear about your girl...and I hope you can find some comfort for her. Keeping her in my thoughts.

Tanner had it, along with the rear end neuropathy that can come with it. I would not do the surgery. Tan lived for a few years with just the basic LP.

    Good Luck

I don't know that you have an option to not fix it at this point if it failed-- this is something to discuss w/ the vet. I hope he/ she is board certified on the procedure as that can have a big influence on the outcome. You may have to sedate her if she's that anxious in a crate.

I was in your situation many years ago but chose not to do the surgery. My girl lived another 2 yrs or so. I suspect Mata (11.5+) has a slight case of it as she is a little raspier w/ age after a lot of exercise, but again, I'm not doing the surgery rather just keeping her on Cholodin supplements (can order thru Amazon or Healthy Pets) which should help slow the development. Best of luck. anne

My Tootsie had LP from having her vocal cords cut, she was a puppy mill survivor that is where her cords were cut a couple of times leaving scar tissue to keep her quiet. Tootsie was around 3 yrs old when we adopted her and she lived to be 13 yrs actually a couple months shy of her 14th birthday. While the tie back surgery was suggested to us at one time I declined having it done it was just to risky for me. But I do know of someone that has had the surgery done and her lab did fine, so it is a toss up in my opinion.

We tried to keep Tootsie on the lighter side weight wise, as stress free as possible, kept her cool in the summer while letting her enjoy her pool and play time too. You will also have to watch Suzy in the winter if it is too cold it will also cause a bit of problems with breathing. We elevated Tootsie's food bowl, gave her benedryl especially on hot humid days, even explained things to her, believe me it helped letting her know we were going a different way to the store or a repair man was coming to the house. Tootsie wore a collar but it only held her tags and loose enough to just slip over her head. When she was out for a walk we always used a harness any type of a throat correction with a collar is life threatening for an dog with LP. I am so sorry the surgery didn't work for Suzy, will keep you both in our thoughts.

Hello. So sorry to hear what you both have been through....But I am very familiar with the issue..Our 12 year old lab had this problem (several years ago) and we had to make the choice to operate, as he really could not breath very well...We used a doc at Tufts Vet. Hospital (Grafton) who was very experienced with this procedure and ALL went very well! No complications. However, the neuropathy did eventually totally cripple his hips about a year later, and sadly he no longer had any use of his legs..and we had to let him go..If you would like to know the doc's name, I can look it up for you. You can email me directly--mtpeony@aol.com

    Suzy LP and surgery

am new on this site as of 01.02.17 and sent a reply to you about Suzy.
have now idea if it will reach you so am trying this title page so see if it will reach you.
My black Labrador had aLar Par tie back in Medford Oregon July 2015. The surgery was successful and very frightening for me to experience for fear of my dog dying.
I tried to be calm. keep Blue calm, feed him small kibble and rabbit canned food. It is the richest protein which the vet suggested to help him keep up his strength. He was 13 1/2 years old when he had the surgery.
I kept his meals, wet with warm water so he could not inhale kibble, kept the air moist with a humidifier, went for short walks so he kept his lungs working. made sure he had a snack of wet kibble with cottage cheese or canned fish at noon, only 1/4 cup.
When he coughed the hoarse cough I gave a teaspoon of olive oil to him. It seemed to soothe his swallowing and helped his lar par tie back in his throat. All the while I was scared he might die. I prayed, and left the results up to God.
Kept our little Shadow girl dog separated from him so he could rest and not tear his stitches. As he healed he was able to go for short walks on level ground. When his breathing sounded stressed we stopped to have him lie down on the ground until his breathing returned to normal. Then we went to the car and home. I kept other does away from him so went at unusual times to walk him when the dog parks were not busy. Grants Pass is dog city. So I was careful to keep him away from all other dogs. Only Shadow came with us. I am a senior citizen. Disabled and not so steady on my feet. We just to the best we can do for them and remain their leaders with calm confidence and give lots of praise.
Blue's dam was euthanized when she was 13. She had the same disease and I had no money to pay for a surgery. At that time we lived near enough to Phoenix that we could have found a surgeon to do the Lar par. Letting her go was so hard to do. Her ashes went into the Rogue River in Oregon as we were there for part of 2015. She always loved the water and swam after the ducks with all the strength she had. Now she is on the other side of the veil we can not see. I believe her spirit is with all the other dogs who have died and running free and happy where there is much water and many ducks for her to hunt.
Please let me know how you and Suzy are doing. Will you?
