    Old man cough?

My 13 year old has had a weird "old man cough" since he was maybe 9... the vet checked him for everything, including checking to see if the fatty deposit along his chest (which is huge, but considered a cosmetic issue since it isn't causing problems or bothering him) could be causing it. Eventually, she just said, it's just an old man cough... he does it when he inhales too sharply, or when I'm vacuuming or other times you'd expect a human to cough, so it doesn't seem like much of an issue... does anyone else's dog do this? I do know he has some allergies...

Geez... that's scary... fortunately, my boy isn't having any problems and his breathing and stuff has always been perfectly normal. He just coughs occasionally. I'll ask his vet about it, though.

Danny and Sunnie both have sensitive throats. A good round of bitey face leaves them both coughing. Dan also coughs sometimes when he's playing with his stuffies (I figure he's inhaling fibers or dust), rolling energetically, or outdoors when it's windy or really cold. He's always checked out fine at the vet's office so I continue to think it's stuff irritating an otherwise normal throat.

Same with Sage. He has two vets (one has seen him for years but has limited hours) and neither are worried about it... I think my mom may have actually had him scoped at one point for it. I'd have to check his records. He does it a lot more while rolling in grass (which we know he's allergic to).

Oh, yeah...both of mine do it in the grass, too.

Coughing can be a symptom of many things. Oban has roundworms, coughing can be a symptom, Oban never coughed. A faecal float would determine this and you likely have one done once a year anyway at his age.

It can be a symptom of congestive heart failure we were told when another of our dogs was found to have an enlarged heart. We were told to watch out for coughing but she didn't.

Aww... that is also terrifying... he doesn't have any known health issues... people frequently think he's a giant puppy. He goes in for all his annuals, gets his blood work, etc. Both vets agree that he's amazingly healthy. They disagree about his arthritis (which I found odd). One said it's primarily in his hips, the other days he only sees it in his right knee. Currently, he displays no hip issues, but the knee is obvious, so maybe he WAS having a flare up there and it settled, whereas there is definitely damage in the right knee.
Anyway... the cough. It doesn't seem to bother him one bit, and he *appears* to be in perfect health. I will ask, though.

Here he is. 100lbs of giant strong dog. As long as he's on his rimadyl (for the knee), he still jumps over the back of the couch and all over everywhere else. I do see him slowly weakening in terms of the arthritis, but the rimadyl seems to have solved that as long as I can pay for it.

Just a side note, LP doesn't have to be the worst case. Hudler had the old man hacking for years, and when the rear legs started wasting away, we were SURE it was LP. If you notice his muscles going in the back legs and getting weak, then you'll know. Hope it's just a hack, but be prepared.
