New Medication has been Approved for Arthritis in Dogs

Our vet had told me about this new drug coming out for arthritis which is not supposed to have all the bad side effects Rimadyl can have. Rimadyl can be especially bad for Labs' livers, & since our Lab, Molly, already has elevated ALT levels, we didn't want to put her on that. My vet just got the new medication recently & so we put Molly on it last week. I think I see some improvement, but I hope it's not just wishful thinking. Vet said to try it for 2 or 3 days & if we thought it was working, we could try reducing it to half a pill per day, so that's what we are doing now. The only trouble is, this new drug, Galliprant is expensive--$50 for 10 pills. We'll see how Molly does.....It is still an NSAID, so has some risks, but not as bad as Rimadyl can be for Labs.....

Yukon is on Galliprant. He had a bad reaction to Rimadyl last September, where he stopped eating and his ALT liver value went through the roof ( a marked 20 fold increase, very serious) over a couple of weeks. Thankfully with removal of the toxic substance and use of Denamarin, he came back to normal values over time. He's been on Galliprant for about a month now and his follow up bloodwork last Friday was perfect, so from that perspective, I think this new NSAID is good.

I can't say, however, if it is helping him as he's got some back end weakness and C-spine issues, which are still evident. If it was strictly an arthritic issue, this could be a very good drug.

Molly is on Denamarin also, & has been for probably a year now. She will probably have to stay on it. She also has the hind end weakness, which we figured probably was from arthritis, as the vet didn't feel anything obvious by feeling her hips & knees. But since starting on the Galliprant, she seems a little more comfortable in general, seems to have an easier time getting up, & just seems happier again. We have one of those lifting harnesses for her, but I haven't put it on her for 3 nights now, & she seems to be getting around the house pretty well again. It's just so hard to see them getting old!

Yukon has a help em up harness, he just wears the front end portion. I use it to help him down, stairs, out of vehicle, etc. I like him to climb stairs on his own however because it's very good muscle building for rear end weakness. He also is in therapy for water treadmill, exercises, laser light, etc. As long as it's safe (they're not falling, etc.), any uphill walking or climbing up stairs is good for their back end. He doesn't need the rear harness yet, so I do as much hill/stair work as he'll tolerate. His general walking distance is much diminished from last year unfortunately. At 10 1/2, I thought I had at least another year before I would be dealing with this, but he has declined in the last 6 months, which is hard.

I started my dog on Galliprant about a month ago and it seems to be helping. It is expensive, but if it works, it'll be worth it. My dog is a 12.5-year old with arthritis in her two back legs due to two TPLOs and she now has elbow dysplasia, which seems to be the worst issue right now. I haven't seen anything negative about Galliprant, but since it's new I am hoping that's not due to lack of experiences with it.

Make sure you check out elancorebates for up to $90 off Galliprant, $20 off Adequan and a bunch of other stuff...I stumbled across it by accident but they were very quick with turn around of the rebate.
