Mulder was like this off and on his whole life. My trainer’s theory (she’s had LOTS of dogs) was that he most likely was occasionally whacking his knee on the step while going up, and then he would think the stairs had “bit” him and he would be afraid and reluctant until he’d forgotten about it. And then it would happen again ...

    Poor buddy!

Mardi always wanted to be downstairs in the basement if I was down there but then it got to the point she could not get back up the stairs. OK if DH was home, horrible trying to help her get back up on my own. Ended up putting a gate at the top of the stairs.

Oh no, I am really sorry! My guess would be spinal issue too, especially since he has some hind end weakness. Blocking the stairs is a good suggestion.

Glad to hear he is doing okay now.

Makes me sad that so many of our babies are old now, & having all these troubles! I remember when they were all young........

Poor Ram, I am so glad he seems to be much better!
I am facing the same issues with Emma and am thankful we only have 4 steps going in/outside. It just sucks to watch our seniors age but the alternative sucks much worse!
