As with the others, I'd probably try to go ahead with the trip. I'm assuming he enjoys being at the cottage and, as you said, it might be his last opportunity to go. I'm not saying that to make it a sad trip or grant it extra significance, but because if it's something you and he both enjoy and it's still cool enough to make the trip, I'd go for it. Otherwise it might feel like you're just sitting at home waiting for the end. A few stops along the drive to get out and walk around, have a snack, get a drink, sniff some of the local scents sounds like something pretty doable. Good luck, let us know what you decide!

The hardest thing with Tootsie was letting Tootsie be herself and live life to the fullest. She was pretty good to know her own limits, when to stop playing and catch her breath or cool down in her pool. There was a couple of times she was excited playing and i had to tell her to take a break. I hope you both are able to relax and enjoy your trip

If you think his answer would be yes I want to go, then I would take him.
There's a quote from The Shawshank Redemption that epitomizes the way (I feel) dogs live their life.

Thanks everyone
This really hit me. Because honestly - that's probably what I have been doing. I have been white knuckling and paranoid. refusing to make any plans cuz "I don't know how Rocky will be or if he will be there". Even my vet is telling me to relax (in a nice way!).
we went for a drive yesterday (to pick something up) and he just snoozed on the back seat. Not the accomodations he'll have on his trip but it's not like being in the car stressed him out. getting in and out does but if we are careful and take our time we can get that done safely and without causing him pain.
I REALLY wish I had a dog I could carry though. I TOTALLY TOTALLY understand all those who've downgraded in size for their next dog. I love labs but I will only look at those under 70 pounds (preferably closer to the 60pd mark!)
I"ll keep you all posted.

I say go. Don't know much about LP, but I do like to treat my older girl 12 1/2 as if she is not 12 1/2 in the hope she will never realize she is older. We are doing a long road trip in a few months time and she is coming along, and there will be hiking involved most days .... she may have to be crated in the cabin to rest up on one or two of the days if it is too much for her, but we let her do as much as she can (she does not like being left). I don't mind travelling wo th bigger dogs, road trip a lot with 2 or 3.
Well gosh, it's no wonder you feel that way. It has been less than a year since Penny died and even though you absolutely did every. single. thing. exactly right, the outcome was still sad. That would make anyone more cautious and worry about making the wrong choices. I like what Sue Ram said, if you think Rocky would say that yes, he'd like to go, then that's what I'd do.
