Happy 13th Birthday My Sweet Dakotamarie

Here she is: My sweetheart. She turned 13 yesterday and I have to say-I am super blessed for her friendship every single day. Hard to believe that 13 years ago this little chocolate kiss was born-meant for me I am certain.-dakota13-jpg I just hope and pray that every day brings her joy. She's been my best friend for so long-seeing me through life. Lately she's been panting a lot more and I know its summer, so I try to keep her cool. She still wants to go walking every chance she gets however her back end is much weaker. If China bumps into her she can knock her down. I use a frozen pad for her at night and during the day I watch her on camera (if she's within view) while I am at work. Today I see that she is restless-it seems she wants to get up on the bed but she doesn't really try that when I'm not there to help her anymore. She is panting a bit but its not hot today. I think its time to get her back in to the vet to see if we can get her on something to help if there is discomfort...or to at least see if there is ...

I want this to be a happy thread, not full of worry like I usually do lol
Here's to you Dakota-and to our friendship spanning 13 years. People should be like their dogs: loyal and true and grateful. I love you princess and am so thankful for you every day girl.

A few days ago we were at the park and nobody else was there-she was watching some birds and I looked around...unhooked her leash and whispered to her GO! and she ran like the wind. I figured you know I try so hard to keep her safe and from injury in her older years, but honestly who knows how much time any of us have left and if I don't let her do it now her back end will only get worse until she just cant do it anymore. So I let her go and cheered her on. She was faster than I thought she'd be at 13. And so beautiful and free and happy. Then we went into the water and although her back end wavered a bit-she was no worse for the wear. We walked on and enjoyed the evening. Me and my girl. Like we've done for 13 years now.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAKOTA!

Aww that dog park story is beautiful. I totally agree, we can be sooo protective of our old dogs but at the same time we have to let them have some fun. Sounds like she is doing pretty good for 13! walks, park, swimming! getting on the bed! (it's been a very long while since Rocky got on the bed even with a step)

what does the cool pad do?

(it wasn't a dog park LOL I am the one person who HATES when ppl take their dogs there off leash, so I was a hypocrite --but there was NO ONE there and after her dip I put her leash back on )

I bought this cooling pad form Dr Foster & Smith, you can put it under a sheet or blanket-its basically like an ice pack you would put in a lunch box but bigger so they have something cold to lay on. She moves off of it but I constantly wake up and put it back near her to help keep her cool My dh puts the AC to like 78-80 at night thinking oh we're asleep anyway...but she gets too warm and I do too, so I turn it down and get this pad out...

Love the image of her running after those birds! You go Dakota! You know how often their heart is in it even if their body isn't. How nice she got to have both working well that evening! Happy Birthday, Dakota!

    Happy Birthday Dakota.

Know what you mean about the running. Oban's ortho rehab said leashed walks no more than half an hour. He doesn't understand that, so I don't leash him. I do try to keep to the time.
