    thank you Berna.

I just cannot understand this. how 48 hours ago she was fine (for a 13 yo) and now she is not able to get up on her own. I feel like the medicines hit her hard. And that mass....I am sick to death over this. Literally sick and afraid

You could Google search for In Home Vet and hospice care. Not sure where in NJ you are but there must be some. In the New England area there were several, and would usually respond within 24hrs. They can evaluate the situation, provide meds and testing and ultimately let them pass if it's at that point. I did not end up using these services because my "new" vet came to my house, but I did call a couple and was intending on using them.

Here's one example that shows 3 Dr's in Nj, but there is likely more beyond this particular company if you do a Google search.

thanks outrag. the in home prices are all $300 +....i wish I could say it didn't matter. Im going to have to have a neighbor help me get her into my truck again if my husband is not home when / if. I've asked my nearby vet if she will come into my truck so I can be alone with Dakota and she said yes. I just dont know if I will make it to that place by the time they close. I may have to go to the place I went to last night.i just cannot even believe this is happening

Wow, OK, it was not that high in this area. Best of luck.

Pleasant Valley. They know full well that my home is 1/2 mile from them. I realize some places don't do emergency care as that brings up a whole lot of other stuff maybe she doesn't want to be involved in but my goodness. If I were a vet and a client called whom I treated their pets for 13 years and she was crying, I would not have it in me to say no. They called me first thing today to check on Dakota. And they did get her records over to the e-vet fast for me last night. But that e vet was a 40 minute drive to an unknown place and I had to make that drive with a sick Lab over a highway. And then back home again.

If I remember right, some dogs react poorly to Tramadol and need a different pain management medicine. One of mine did. She wouldn't get up, eat, or drink. She was extremely lethargic while on those pills.

With Lucy at 13-3/4 years old, it happened VERY fast. We knew we were facing it soon, but all of a sudden she stopped getting up and the panting was constant and now I've forgotten what few other little things helped us decide it was time. I'm really sorry to say this to you, because i KNOW how hard this is, but for me, I'm inclined to say this is it, I'd want to end her pain. It sounds like she's not having any quality of life. For us, we felt that we weren't ready, but I told DH that I didn't think I'd ever be ready, and it wasn't fair to make Lucy wait until we thought we might be ready. When DH cried and said he wanted for her to have no pain anymore, and that he knew she was not enjoying life, I knew it was time, and we had to give that to her.
Many, many hugs to you as you go through this.

i guess the hard part is always wondering if this is just a few bad days and things will be better soon...or more than than a few bad days will hanging on 3-4 days get us back to where we were before or not?

Hanging on for a few days may actually get us back. The vet said he thinks she's really groggy from all the medicine so to back off the tramadol from 3 to 2 pills. He also said he thinks a few days of the prednisone with change this sleepiness.

Lucytude you are right. This is not on my terms. This is about her and it's my responsibility to do what's best for her. Thank you for saying that.

Let me back up....I got home this afternoon to her laying in the same spot and I switched around so.e other appointments in case I needed to take her but after I got her up she steadied herself and walked. She went out to poop and pee. She ate the treats I gave her. She wagged her tail and smiled. She then laid down by where my husband was sitting and then got up on her own. Two times to follow me!! I was beside myself with joy. I know it's not going to be fixed. But I know for today I do not have to make the call. I asked her if she wanted to go sniffing at the park and she gave me that excited face and her ears went forward and she gave me a head tilt. Oh my goodness what a dog does to one's soul.

So after talking with the vet he suggested range of motion exercises for the swollen leg and backing off the tramadol to see if less grogginess helps in getting her to get up. He said to give it a few days.
Thank you all for posting, all of your thoughts are a comfort to me and helpful. I think I'm going to give this another day or two. Boy to see her so happy is truly a blessing.
