    Surgery at age 13

Çilek has sebaceous cyst on her eyelid for some time. Since she has gone through a lot in the last months I had to ignore that cyst. But it got bigger and yesterday infected. So today I took her to the ophthalmologist. He said she needs surgery (as expected). She also has two iris cysts on the same eye. They will be removed too.
The thing is she is almost 13 and taking Rimadyl regularly. I'm already worried about her liver and kidneys. Blood test results came back normal at the end of July. If they came back normal right before the surgery will it really be safe for her to get anesthesia?
If levels are not good she will not have the surgery for sure but I don't know what will happen to that eye.

Looks like I do not have many options here. She is not comfortable with that eye. But surgery at age 13 makes me worry a lot.

By the way this will be her second surgery on the same eyelid. 2 years ago she had the same growth. It has returned. Vets are different. This vet is specialized on eye health and I trust him a lot. Cilek had corneal ulcer because of the first surgery and at that time I found this vet. He did an amazing job on her eye. But still, surgery at 13

You've had a hard road with poor Cilek. It sounds like the growth is affecting quality of life so if her vitals are good, surgery sounds like it's for the best. Many older dogs have surgery and do well, as long as their system is still strong.

Sending prayers her bloodwork comes out strong and surgery goes well!

So sorry the lump has come back. Since it is affecting the eye and most likely uncomfortable, surgery sounds like the only option. The best you can do is make sure all blood work is normal and a thorough senior check up is done. Sending prayers.

As others have said, if it's about quality of life, I'd do it. Fingers crossed.

Hope all goes well for sweet Cilek. I share your concerns about the surgery but it sounds like that's the best course of action, providing that her bloodwork is good. It sounds like a lot of people here have had successful, uneventful, surgery on older dogs throughout the years.

Hi Oya! To me it kind of sounds like you don't have much choice if you want to keep Cilek comfortable. I know, we always have a choice when it comes to surgery, but something on her eyelid must be irritating, and I suppose could grow bigger. If it were me, I'd probably go ahead & have the surgery, & keep my fingers crossed that she does o.k with anesthesia, etc. This would depend on the pre-surgery blood work, which can indicate if there is some existing problem. If the blood word is fine, I would likely go through with it. We will all be "waiting with you!" You are not alone!

We used to have a dog, Cody, who had a big fatty lipoma between her shoulder blades. It was huge & hard, & I didn't see how she could be comfortable with that thing being where it was, so I opted for surgery. Cody did fine, but it did take her longer to come out of the anesthesia, and the recovery process did seem much harder & longer than it did for, say, her spay, or dentals, etc, when she was young.

Now, our Lab, Molly, has fatty lipoma's, some of which are huge, but I won't have surgery on those this time. There are many of them, & with Molly's arthritis, etc, I don't want her to go through surgery unless she has to. Now, if she had something growing on her eyelid that was causing her pain or irritation, I'd want the vet to take it off if possible, hoping that the surgery would not take long, & the vet wouldn't have to keep her under anesthesia very long.

Please let us know what you decide, & if you decide on surgery, please let us know when it will be so we can all wait with you......Hugs to you & precious Cilek!

Thank you so much. You're right. I do not have much choice here. She is uncomfortable with that growth. Now we're using eye drops until the surgery and she seems better.
Surgery will be on 7th of October. I'll go abroad for 10 days soon. I thought about changing the dates but vet said that it's not that urgent. He prescribed eye drops to make her comfortable until that time. Recovery period is 10 days. She will need eye drops at least 4 times a day during this period. She will wear e-collar. So it will be a long 10-day, but in the end, if evertyhing goes well, she will be much better.

10 days is too long for me to be away from them, especially Cilek, but I'm trying to be positive.

Yes, with arthritis and with this left eye 2 years ago I agreed to eyelid surgery because I didn't want her to have the surgery later in her life. But now, here we are again. I hope her organs are perfect and she can have this surgery with no problems.
Thank you so much for good wishes!

We did major surgeries on two of ours, one 13 and one 14, both invasive. Our 13 year old had poor liver values because the tumor on her pancreas was causing the liver to work overtime. We did it anyway because we were short on options and she was fine. She was so much happier afterward as well. Anesthesia is never good but the relief of stress on Cilek might make it worth it. I would do it.

    All good thoughts.
