    Vestibular Disease... Again

Yesterday Happy (Weim) was diagnosed with Vestibular Disease. She is displaying similar symptoms like Max. But it had turned out Max didn't have vestibular diseases.

But why so soon after loosing Max. It has been a month since we lost Max.

Yesterday morning, after her breakfast, I took her out for a walk. Then I sent her to wait for me inside, but instead she sat just outside the front door to wait for me. When I was coming up the stairs, she turned and fell. She could sit, but couldn't put any weight on her back legs. I pushed her inside because by then the two goats we have had finished eating and were coming around her and wanting to go into the house. I checked her for bites incase a snake or spider had bitten her but there were no signs. A few minutes later she threw up and couldn't even move away. I had to call my husband to come home from work, because even just walking away from her to get a towel to clean her up caused her extreme anxiety. I called the vet to see her, but they couldn't see her until the afternoon. By the time it was time to take her in, she couldn't sit anymore, and just lay there. Her eye was moving back and forth. And she was extremely anxious during the 3 minute ride to the vet (their office is just up the street from our home).

They gave her a steroid shot and a different injection for the nausea. She didn't seem to have any issues with her ears, no ear infection or anything. He sent home more pills for the nausea, hopefully she will take them. We have extreme difficulty getting her to take any medications.

This morning her eyes were more calm. She didn't have as much side to side movement. And she as able to get back to an upright position, though not quiet sitting up. She still has anxiety to be left alone.

Seems like a coincidence... So I wonder if there is something else that could be cause this?

Max & Leeloo's diet was the same Blue Buffalo - Senior.
Happy is on Kidney Care (k/d) from Hills.

Jolie had vestibular once and I was sure she was having a stroke or a seizure or something, but the vet took one look and said the eye movement was diagnostic. They gave her IV dramamine and it helped immensely. She was pretty much better within 24 hours, but I know it usually takes several days to a week or so for most dogs. Hope your baby feels better soon!

Poor girl. It makes me feel dizzy and a little nauseated just to read about her eye movements (nystagmus). I hope you find some way to get her to take the meds. What medication is it? I'm just wondering if it can be crushed, how large the pills are, if it comes in liquid or chewable form, that sort of thing. Maybe someone will have some ideas you haven't tried for getting her to take them.

sending good thoughts for a quick bounce back. I haven't lived thru it but have heard my friend and a vet describe it and it's pretty scary. Thankfully most dogs bounce back and are back to normal.

A friend of mine's GSD had vestibular disease after hitting her head on the side of their sliding glass door. I remember she was given a concoction of herbal/holistic stuff and recovered...all I remember specifically was Evening Primrose Oil. Many good thoughts for Happy's recovery.

She is taking Cerenia, and I have been cutting it in have and putting it in a hotdog. So far so good. She is improving.
