I always think of myself as having 3 young dogs, and compared to the ages at which we lost our old ones (14, 15, and just shy of 16) I do, but yesterday at the vet they needed to do some bloodwork on Chloe (following up on a positive anaplasmosis test) and said “since we’re taking blood, why don’t we run a senior panel too, since she is 8 so technically a senior”. What? Chloe’s a senior???? Nope. No how, No way. Hate to think of her as getting older, but at least she doesn’t show it in any way shape or form.
Her bloodwork came back “beautiful” by the way, so hopefully it’ll be a few more years before I have to post about her here again, LOL.

I really don't consider an 8 year old Lab a senior. Cookie didn't slow down until the accident, and he was 9 by then. He was in best shape when he was 7, really fit and muscular.

Danny is 8 1/2 and I only have to look at his face to be reminded that he's technically a senior. He's really gathering the white. Sunnie's face is just getting that soft look but her coloring hides the white (we figure she's about 15).
Danny's always going to be my puppy, though, regardless of his age.
Oh, the title to the post scared me, thinking something was wrong. I was almost not going to open it. Good to hear 'beautiful' bloodwork!!!!
Yeah, I don’t either, that’s why I was really freaked out when they suggested a senior panel. The only problems she ever seems to have are all related to her foot injury from a few years ago (being slightly out of whack on that side has bothered her back and at the moment her hip a bit), but that isn’t really age related. Her father was still actively competing at 10, so to me, 8 is still quite young!

Zoey will be 9 next March and thats when my vet suggested a senior work up. I dont think of myself as having a senior either. Chloe and Zoey are still youngins!!

I like doing bloodwork at least once while they are still healthy. 7-8 i guess. i may not start doing it yearly then but I like having a baseline. (Unless of course you've done bloodwork for other reasons around then).
Dogs age differently. I see dogs at 8-9-10 looking strong and quite active. Others by 9-10 slow down or look "old". Rock aged quickly with his neurological issues. By...11? I was dropping him off to do longer walks with penny (at least in the summer)
But a healthy lab with good energy and no chronic health issue isn't a senior at 8

Don't scare us like this!
She certainly works and plays like a healthy middle-aged Lab!

Well, if you hang around in this sub forum, Chloe's a young ' un! Kimber was in excellent shape at 7, when she had her spinal injury. She was able to regain her mobility for so long because she was so fit before the injury.
Here's hoping Chloe has an uneventful adulthood!
