Yes so many of us can relate. I also thought I would get past it at some point and just move on, and that hasn't really happened and I don't think it will. There are always thoughts and reminders, but you have the good memories mixed with the reality of the loss, and you learn to manage it as best you can.

I don't want to say that getting another dog takes the place of the one you loss, because it's not true. I will say that after almost a year of waiting, I did in fact get a "puppy" and it did occupy my life so much that I did in fact move into another phase of dealing with the loss. Not the same dog obviously, but it certainly has helped.

There is nothing wrong with crying for your loss of Kimber because it shows your true, deep love for her. A new house and job may keep your mind occupied for awhile, but there will always be thoughts or items or places that trigger the grief to resurface.

It is so hard to love these wonderful dogs and then lose them. The members here CAN empathize with you and know how you feel and want to help by sending our best lab board MOJO to you.

    Sending many to you.

I still have those moments over Montana and Dakota both. Just this morning something made me think of Montana in a way that brought instant tears and then a few minutes later-a memory of Dakota did the same. I can go weeks hell months without episodes like this and then in one moment the flood gates open. The bond is so strong. And they are friendships that span longer sometimes than human relationships so how can we expect this to not happen? I can say though-another dog and the love they bring-is a tremendous joy that somehow does make it bearable. I have found such solace in the fur of my sweet China. Never a replacement, but in a way I think dogs are meant for this-leading us through. Thinking about you. I know it hurts.

Thank you all, so very much. I was just looking at a calendar and realized that within 7 calendar days:

    1. We had to let Kimber go.
    2. We signed a contract to put our beloved house on the market.
    3. We moved to a new city.
    4. We both started new jobs.
    5. Two days after it being on the market, we accepted an offer on the house.

And... one week later, I lost my dear grandmother.

So I have had a ton of change, and a lot of grieving to process. I think Kimber/leaving my house and friends/my grandma are all wrapped up in a wriggly mess of sadness.

We have a multi-week trip out of the country in June, so we're tentatively targeting July as a time to add another canine companion. In the meantime, I'll just love on neighbor Magnus as much as I can.

A couple of Saturdays ago we had snow in the morning and freezing rain in afternoon and when I went outside to shovel, the snow had a crusty top on it and my immediate thought was "Kimber would hate this".
