What about outside on nice, short grass? Sis's dog was better outside, walking. Well, staggering, but inside he could not stand up at all. Laddie did have phobias about smooth floors but he seemed unable (unwilling?) to try inside at all, not even on carpet.

Snowshoe, we put Opal's lower ex-pen outside on the grass in a sunny/shaded area and Opal loves to lay in there. She also gets mini walks in the backyard, although she'd like to go for her regular walks outside of the yard, but I'm not ready for that yet. Opal is harnessed with a short leash (which was Nellie's, who died over 30 years ago - always good to keep old dog leashes, etc) and slinged under her belly/in front of hind legs for extra support.

I'm glad to hear that Opal is showing progress....slow and steady is good.

Even though it's raining, I took Opal for a mini walk to "her" park and it went better than I thought it would. Opal has the strength to do the walk, but she's still tilting to the left. The tilting bothers me more than her. Slowly we'll increase the distances of our walks. Yahoo, our first walk!!

Congrats to you and your sweet Opal!! Your comment about the head tilt bothering you more than her really hits home as I think WE all are more concerned with a medical condition with our dogs than they are. Maybe we should be more like them and just live in the moment sometimes.

      Glad she is making progress.

      Another Opal update:

It's been 4 weeks since Opal had the stroke. She's walking solo in the house upstairs, but still no stairs without our help (she would fall down them). We still help her with our walks, although Opal thinks she should go solo then too...not a chance, uneven ground makes her too wobbly and the risk of falling. Her left-sided head tilting is a little less and her left turns are becoming more stable. So, when the vets say give it 3-4 weeks (or longer) for a good recovery, they're right. We're giving it longer...

Thanks again for your well wishes for Opal!
