    Do their nails grow faster?

I can barely keep up with Nikki's nails as she gets older. Is it that they're growing faster as she ages or that we don't walk as far on asphalt? And they're chunky too. They used to grow out in points and I'd just clip those off but now they're boxy on the ends. I need to use a file.

It sure seems like that huh? My 3 boys (age 7 1/2 to 10 1/2), their nails grow overnight it seems.

I noticed it with one dog and a couple of cats. The nails grew faster and thicker. Think it's a combination of not as much use and change in growth pattern with aging. Happens with people as we age too, some of us.

This thread is interesting. Both of our dogs get lots of walks and runs on pavement/sidewalks. We never need to trim Murphy's nails, his are always trimmed down at a good level from the walks. Mayson on the other hand, it's like the sidewalk has no effect on his nails and we need to trim his.

Interesting how it is different on two dogs that get the same type of exercise....

Hmm ... I never thought about it before but I suspect it’s a combination of aging and less exercise. I know that particularly with spayed females, their coats tend to change as they age and since hair and nails are often affected by the same factors I can’t see why nails wouldn’t change ...

My almost 11 year old's nails grow so fast! Her coat is crazy too, but se has slowed down a lot, she gets exercise but not enough to keep her nails as short as I like, (I like them Short!).

If a Labrador has a correct foot, (strong, compact, tight, well arched toes), they wear down their nails naturally and you rarely have to cut, or dremel them.

Not having had the experience of "puppy" nails, it seems I'm getting nails trimmed quite often. Obviously, fewer long walks, especially on concrete is a factor. Katie's seem to be growing nonstop lately.

Yeah, it was interesting when Chloe severed the tendon in her back foot, which changed the way her foot hits the ground (she is slightly down on the hock and her toes are more splayed). Prior to that we’d only ever needed to do dewclaws on her, then afterwards it was dewclaws and that one back foot. Lately though she needs all of it done, but she is 9 and spayed even though she is just as active so maybe there is something to the aging theory after all.
