    Potty training

Last Thursday we had our first bit of snow which was only 3 centimeters but it was enough for Ram to have issues slipping, sliding and falling and I can't control if or how well people shovel their sidewalk.

Friday morning when we went outside he fell down the 3 concrete steps and I couldn't see anything on the steps that was icy. When we came back he fell on the bottom step and smacked his chin on the step and this was while wearing the Help Em Up harness. After he fell he refused to try again and I can't lift him so we were stuck at the bottom of the steps at 5:30 am. I eventually put dish towels on each step and got him back inside but it's too stressful to try that again.

There's no way that he will be able to manage on any snow or ice this year. If he slips and blows out his good knee on his strong leg that would be the end for him.

On Saturday I bought a piece of the fake grass for the back porch which is 6 x 14 ft for him to use when it snows but he has refused to use it so I need some advice.

I wonder if you picked up another one of his poops and placed it on the turf, he'd get the idea? I'm sorry to hear he's having troubles.

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

Oh, gosh...I'm sorry he and you are having to deal with this. I don't have any suggestions other than what SS mentioned. They do make a spray for getting puppies interested in certain spots, though...I used it for Sunnie's little bums. This one looks familiar: https://www.amazon.com/PoochPads-Pot...tractant+spray

They also make attractant pads that you could put down.

My sister has built a cover for her outside stairs, a whole full story of them. To keep the snow right off, so the dog won't slip. I will try to get a photo.

Or, what about a ramp with cross pieces on it? Like an old wooden tobaggan, but I think it would need to be much wider than a tobaggan.

Im sorry he is having these issues. I was wondering if something like this would help. Im not sure about the fake grass. Although my friends in Colorado use weeds during heavy windy snow storms.

DH build a ramp to bypass the steps. Then we used a rubber backed indoor/outdoor rug runner that he stapled down. It did not ice up, was fairly easy to shovel. We did have to temporarily "fence" the sides until they got used to going all the way down and not trying to jump off sideways. Also found that if help was needed it was easier with the ramp than stairs.

Oh Sue, I am so sorry, poor Ram. Good thoughts for the ole guy, he is a board favorite.

I am guessing that he won't want to pee/poop on the fake grass on the back porch because it is too close to the house, since he is housebroken? They have scented pee pads, that might help, (under the grass?) and like snowshoe said above, placing a stool on the grass to get him started. I also like the ramp idea Poptop suggested.

I am really sorry. Winter really sucks especially for us with the older guys.
