    Hind end difficulties.

I just wanted to put out there that hind end issues (partial collapse, problems walking) could be the result of GI problems. Nikki has had this periodically and needs omeprazole (acid reducer) to take care of it. It took us a while to figure it out.

Interesting connection. Would not have thought of that.

Was she also having GI symptoms? Sunnie's back end is giving out...she seems OK, GI-wise, but she is on Rovera (and I give with yogurt to keep GI stuff away...no apparent issues there). I've been assuming it's "just" the HD and spine issues rearing their ugly heads but I'd explore GI if that might be going unnoticed.

Why is that? Is there a link to read more about it? Is it due to just a general not feeling good and too weak to want to move (as with Oban) or is there a more direct connection? Nikki is better now, it seems, GOOD.

With humans, it can cause lower back pain (nerves in one place in close proximity to other places or something like that)...I've had intestinal distress (from intolerances) cause my entire lower back area to hurt. But this sounds like it might cause actual weakness etc. Inquiring minds definitely want to know.

I know that a healthy gut is important for overall health, but I'd never have associated it with hind-end issues.

I remember though that a few years ago when Cookie was constipated, x-ray showed arthritis in the spine (that's how we found that out) and the vet had told me that Cookie's bowel movements were affected by the issues in the spine. Could it be vice versa too?

We were having her checked for dysplasia, UTIs and she gets and ultrasound every two (now three) months so we were able to eliminate all of that. She does have vertigo as well but the meclizine didn't work during some episodes. So we just started experimenting with the array of drugs we have on hand one at a time. It turned out that when her hind end was collapsing and she was having a hard time walking she wouldn't eat so we tried omeprazole and it worked on its own within minutes. She was standing and walking without a problem and ate everything. She would also start farting up a storm. We started adding a bunch of mylanta and bentonite clay to her food (I know, right, but she snarfs it right up). She has been on a regulated homemade bland diet for years with the supervision of a holistic vet so there aren't any other options there.

Our understanding is that it's a combination of gas buildup, constipation (sometimes she would go out repeatedly without success) and acid. Basically, the collapse is pain from GI distress.

It's worth a shot if you can't find anything else going on. We give her one omeprazole max every 24 hours if we are seeing that dip in her back end. Works like a charm. Nikki may be the most tested dog in history so I wanted to pass along the experience.

Hi, we recently had vet show us with xrays that our 14 y/o Yellow Lab has collapsed or narrow vertebrae and was told that causes lack of connection with hind limbs and paws. For that it is treated with anti-inflammatory plus Tramadol. On the anti-inflammatory has anyone had issues with Rimadyl, Previcox, Deramaxx? Thank you.

My Hershey was on a combination of Tramadol and Rimadyl with no issues (spinal stenosis) but we weren't really sure he was pain free.

I have my Sunnie on Rovera (Rimadyl) for arthritis and she's had good bloodwork/no issues except for heightened anxiety for over a year. She's a very anxious dog, though, and seems to be getting weirded out by her weakening legs.

My Akita girl was on Rimadyl at 1/2-dose because of GI issues with the full dose (even gave it with yogurt just to get the 1/2-dose acceptable). Relief and no issues.

    Good luck....welcome to the board.
