    Unhappy Possible Depression?

I'm not sure if Happy is depressed. She just lays on her bed. We call her and she will lift her head and look at us but then put her head back down. She doesn't get up to eat nor does she want to go outside (eventually she will go but come back in right away - I don't know if it's just too cold for her).

I don't know if she is sick, Saturday she threw-up her kibble. She is on kidney care food, She keeps down when I give her can food or boiled chicken w/rice.

I don't know if she is just taking the loss of Leeloo really hard or if because we were so focused on Leeloo we might have missed that Happy is ill as well. But she has always run up the ramp, until Saturday when we lost Leeloo...

Monday I wanted to take her to the Vet, but when my husband came home, she got up and greeted him and walked with him a bit, so I thought she was better. I had to leave to a wedding out of town Monday afternoon, but he stayed with her. Yesterday when I got back I saw no improvement. She keeps the chicken and rice down, but she is still not herself. I called the vet today, but both vets are out, they have a substitute from a nearby clinic. I figure since she is keeping her chicken down and drinking some water, she can hold off until tomorrow when her usual vet is in.

Should I just take her in anyways or wait for her vet tomorrow? She seems so weak, when she walks her hips dip down, like she can't keep them up.

I am so worried about her.

I believe one pet can miss another. I have taken to ensuring we have a burial, preceded by a viewing of the body. I read this might help human children who are too young to understand why a grandparent is no longer there, to see the body at the funeral. If the child is ok with that. So I do the same thing. Since I have been doing this I have not seen a surviving pet look for the missing one for days, sometimes it was weeks. I have not observed what I might think was depression but I sure do think animals behave much the same way we do, so depression could be a possibility.

If you were not able to have a little funeral what about a burial ceremony of one of Leeloo's favourite toys, or collar or blanket? It might get the idea across but it's a wild idea on my part. And there's always the fact that coincidence does happen so maybe a Vet visit is in order. In fact, from what you say, I think I'd Vet.

We did bury Leeloo at home next to Max with her collar and leash. It was too cold for Happy and she went inside, she didnt actually stay for the process. We basically repeated what we did when Max passed. Happy was closer to Max, but it was always the 3 of them for so long and now she is the last. We notice she was down when Max passed but not this bad.

My husband said he will go with me tomorrow to take her to the vet.

Definitely a vet visit since there are other medical issues going on.

Pets do grieve the passing of a fur family member. Melody was the worse. Not long after Potion passed I got the guts to clean out the toy box of a few of her favorites. I was bawling and Melody came over, sat next to me and howled.

Unfortunately, we are getting the worse news. She has kidney failure. The vet does not believe any treatment can bring her back.

Oh, no....just seeing this. I'm so sorry this turned out to be a physical problem for Happy. I was hoping that I was wrong in remembering what happened with the cat we had when I moved away from home. My parents thought he was "just" grieving and it turned out to be kidney failure and the timing, as with Happy, was purely coincidental.

Sending good thoughts for Happy's comfort and some quality time.

I kept my 17 1/2 year old (different) cat alive for the last 3 1/2 years of his life (after KF diagnosis and recommendation for subcutaneous fluids which he totally rejected) with making sure he ate to the extent possible and supplemented his food/water with plain Pedialyte. Mischief loved berries and melon, hulless pieces of popcorn...so I gave him foods like that in addition to the rare roast beef (with taurine added) and certain varieties of (gag) Fancy Feast that he agreed to eat. Pedialyte moistened the food and I fed him small meals off a teaspoon. He refused bowl food. I also forced NutriCal down his throat for the calories. 3 1/2 years and Chiffer acted like he felt fine...just slowed down...to his last day (with an appointment). I don't know if any of this might help with thinking about helping Happy survive that nasty diagnosis, but I thought I'd send it your way just in case.

All good thoughts coming your way.
