Now that's it been mentioned, Mom used to boil calf liver with carrots every week for her cocker. She stored it and the juice in the frig, cutting up a little bit each day along with some carrot and some of the juice. I do remember it smelled horrible.

Faye loves liver. But then I love poached eggs which she detests, so there you go.

Interesting thread. You mentioned that Achilles has some kidney disease but you did not elaborate. Chronic kidney disease will cause mild anemia as the kidney is responsible for production of erythropoetin, a hormone for red cell production. Iron deficiency anemia, in dogs, is usually caused by a production problem (as in kidney disease) or due to chronic blood loss that is usually insidious. One of the problems with Deramax as well as other NSAIds is that they reduce the mucous production that lines the stomach wall. Many senior dogs that have been on NSAIDs for a long time will have erosions along the stomach lining that lead to symptoms that might include GERDS, etc. They can also cause insidious blood loss as well as stress on the kidneys. I have many of my clients feed liver for supporting iron deficiency anemia. I use good quality beef liver and have them seer it but leave it raw on the inside. I might suggest that you look into using some natural anti-inflammatory supplements that might allow you to get off or reduce the dosage of the Deramaxx. CBD oil, Golden Paste Turmeric, omega 3s, joint supplements will all help. Good luck.
Hi Dr. Thomas. I appreciate your informed comments. Rergrettably Chili Dog has gone on ahead. See this thread. It was a difficult situation; given his age (at least 14) and the circumstances we chose to let go.
We will keep your recommendations in mind as Fitzi and Lucy age, and as the dogs we own in future years age.
Thank you for chiming in.
