    Getting a little worried...

So I took Lucy to the vet yesterday morning for an unplanned visit. I was cleaning up & Lucy was laying down watching me when she yelped. I didnt see what she was trying to do but assumed it was when she tried to stand up. She was sitting down when I saw her & she yelped again. I ran my hands all over her but couldn't find anything. She went outside, pottied & laid down on the grass, yelped again when she moved. The vet gave her the once over, noticed a slight limp in her rear leg and a couple of new bumps & wants her back in Monday morning for x-rays. She also gave her a shot of rimadyl & gave her 75 mg of rimadyl to take 2 x a day starting today. She also took blood and I totally forgot to ask why the blood sample. She did say the xray would show if this was just arthritis (Lucy is 9) or an injury. The rimadyl seemed to help, Lucy actually got back up on the couch last night (she had stopped doing that a few days ago).

I'm just getting concerned about the blood test, what are they looking for? I'm kicking myself for not asking.

Rimadyl is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatroy medicine that can cause liver damage so they commonly look to see how the dog's liver function is at baseline. Many dogs do just fine on it and can use it for a long-ish period of time without problems. Some do have problems from it so knowing that the pup's liver function is OK at the outset would be important to know. Mine have taken it for short term periods, such as post-dental work or with a limp of uncertain origin, with no problems. If she needs longer term pain management, you could ask about what other meds might be effective with less risk of side effects. I can't think what else they might be doing bloodwork to look for at this point but maybe there's something else I just don't know about.

    Good luck.

The other thing you might want to consider is keeping her off the furniture from now on. That doesn't help leg/spine issues.

Both of mine are now restricted and I know they think they're being punished, but.....oh well....no one's limping.

Thanks Lucy has taken rimdayl before and had blood tests done to check her liver function but usually if she’s been on it for a period of time. She’s due for her physical in July and the vet said she was also doing her heart worm test early while they had the sample.

She surprised me yesterday when she got up on the couch but today she’s staying on her beds- it’s not going to be easy keeping her there but I don’t want her to hurt herself further

Yeah. We have large pillows on the seats of all the upholstered chairs Dan used to sleep on/look out the window from...and the bedroom doors are closed. In hindsight, I wish I'd just trained them to stay off the chairs/beds.

Was she in the same spot for all those yelps? Stray electrical current might cause that. Mice, squirrels can partially damage wiring. Not likely the cause, but weird things can happen and I've heard of this.

So Lucy has hip displaysia, left side worse than the right. Vet recommends Adequan injections 2 x a week for 4 weeks to start and then once a month along with her current supplements (fish oil & glucosomine) She also wants Lucy to finish her current dosage of rimadyl & possibly keeping her on it. So the furniture and stairs are off limits. No off leash time, so the stray cats, rabbits & squirrels can have run of the yard. On a brighter note, she was a hit with all the employees at the vets office!

Oh poor girl. How old is she? She will feel better once the inflammation wears down.

Yes, arthritis tends to "flare" so once this flare calms down she should be able to be a bit more active, although probably not to quite the same level as when she was younger. Another thing to ask about is if they do alternative treatments like acupuncture or cold laser. Both have helped my dogs in the past and are "safer" than meds ....
