Sending good thoughts and prayers for Midnight!
Decided to start a thread on Midnight's cancer previously reported in the Senior Check In thread. So, we went up to the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital on Monday and had him checked out. As previously mentioned, he has Apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma with metastasis to sublumbar lymph nodes (cancerous tumor in one anal sac that has spread to the lymph nodes in his abdomen). To make a long story short, after meeting with the surgeon we have decided to move forward with surgery and scheduled for this coming Friday, 7/18.
The surgeon explained with drawings on the whiteboard that only one nerve going to his sphincter is involved in the tumor area and that they will be able to carefully remove the tumor with a much lower chance (5%) of possible incontinence. This is down from the previously predicted 60% chance we were looking at before we met with the surgeon. She also had some good ideas on how they are going to address the cancer in the lymph nodes.
Midnight will be 11 next month and he is still very robust and healthy, all things considered, so we are going for it. There will likely be some follow up chemo treatments later.
The surgeon really gave us a lot of confidence for a good outcome. She is just brilliant, clear and direct and very confident. She is from Australia and is at CSU on a fellowship.
Dr. Cassandra Prpich
BVSc, MANCZVS (Internal Medicine) Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons
Cassie graduated from the University of Melbourne on the Deans Honour’s list in 2008. She first completed a twelve month internship in Small Animal Surgery and Oncology and then started her second internship and received additional training in both Emergency and Critical Care and Internal Medicine.
Cassie returned to Southpaws in July 2010 to commence a Small Animal Surgery Residency program with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. She has finished her official Residency training program and will be sitting specialty board examinations in February 2014. In 2012 Cassie achieved membership to the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists Internal Medicine Chapter. In 2014 she became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons after passing the certification examinations on her first attempt. This makes Cassie one of the few fully Australian-trained surgeons to pass this examination.
Cassie has published on surgical oncology, and has co-authored an investigation into dental bonding for mandibular fractures. This paper was awarded the “Most Commendable Paper” Prize for 2011 by the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists. Cassie has also presented continuing education lectures to primary care veterinarians throughout Melbourne.
Cassie is currently on leave from Southpaws as she has been accepted into the prestigious one-year Surgical Oncology Fellowship program at Colorado State University, which she is due to start in April 2014. This will make her the 6th Australian to ever be accepted into this program. Cassie enjoys all aspects of surgery, but has a special interest in surgical oncology, neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery. We are looking forward to Cassie returning hopefully in 2015.
So, keep your paws crossed for us on Friday. We will post updates as we can.
