    possible flea allergy

Loki is ten years old. He is losing his hair, breaking out in bald patches all over. Although he is on Frontline, I just discovered he has fleas. I think this is a flea allergy. Besides treating the house, does anyone know of anything I can do for him?

Frontline didn't work for me either and I was very diligent. I found out at the Vet - my girls had fleas, I was dumbfounded! The house had fleas, the yard had fleas. It was awful! The Vet said "welcome to Florida!"
I used Capstar immediately to get rid of the existing fleas on Cassie & Reba. Bathed them and tried Advantix (didn't work either) Called the lawn guy to treat the yard. Vacuumed house daily. Sprayed Zodiac flea stuff on carpets and soft furniture. Laundry was done daily. Checked them often with flea comb. (Drown the ones I found in Dawn). Still had them. I was living, breathing, sleeping flea control.
Switched to Trifexis after 6 weeks of the above. No more fleas!
You may need an antibiotic for secondary infections as well as an alternative preventative. I think you need to see your Vet.

Is he really itchy? My Lily has a flea allergy and goes absolutely bonkers itching if she even gets one flea bite. Through trial and error (which took me close to a year), I have been able to keep her flea and itch free with the following regimen. I spray a natural product called Flea Flicker, Tick Kicker on her once a week and brush it through her coat. I also use a natural flea shampoo called Charlie Dog, put it in a spray bottle diluted with water, and spray it on her legs before she goes outside, every time. I haven't seen a flea on her in at least 2 months doing this and I check her at least twice a day. I do use Frontline as well, but it's been at least 3 months since I last applied it. Also, and this has been the biggest help to Lily by far, I use a product called FidoDerm on her. It's a natural spray that contains aloe, calendula, tee tree oil and lavender oil. It soothes her skin when she gets a bite and she has stopped all of her scratching. Her hair has finally grown back too (she lost a bunch of hair down her back legs and on her chest and belly from scratching so much).

Thank you. This is great information and I think I will try your regimen, if I can find these products. These all sound like they would be ok for a senior.

At first we thought he was getting a hot spot, but then he started getting the bald patches all over and I gave him a bath and found a few fleas. So, I now believe this is what it is.

You can buy Capstar at Petco, but mine keeps it behind the counter, I have to ask for it. So maybe PetSmart has it as well. It will not kill any eggs, so you have to deal with the life cycle of fleas.
Good luck, it's a frustrating task.

I would discontinue the frontline. Your dog really needs a Vet visit especially because he is a senior. I would not give him anything without consulting your Vet first.

Your vet can give an injection (think its called vetalog - it is a steroid) to help with the itching/allergy reaction to flea bites. It worked great for my girls a few years ago. Of course you also have to get rid of the fleas. Capstar oral works quickly. Talk to your vet.

I'm dealing with the same thing. I got a spray at the vet treated my whole house 2 weeks ago been vacuuming everyday and flea coming. Everyone is on Frontline and setinal. I just re sprayed as I was still finding a few on my foster kittens who are to young to be treated yet. I bathen them in dawn flea combed the sprayed everything again and vaccume really well and washed all the dog and cat beds and bedding. I don't think I have many but still very annoying.

Oh and I will be getting more capstar as well. My vet said it's safe to use daily if needed.

I so sympathize with you! Been there. If you only think you have "a few" you will have thousands in a day or two, so don't give up your vigilence just yet.
