    help with Rimadyl...

How long does it take to see it's full effect??
Montana had a bloody nose tonight. We went for our walk and played a bit...since I got home from work he seemed pretty good, then came the sneezing and a bloody nose. If one full day is enough to see what this drug can do then I've got nothing to lose in calling to ask to go back on the dexamethasone. He had one dose this morning and one at dinnertime. Does it take longer than this??
It's obviously too late to call the vet now and at the moment I don't see an emergency. Praying I don't find one at all. Please share some mojo.....again

It could just be the tumor getting bumped or a consequence of the activity, with harder breathing. However, when caring for a friend's Ridgeback with a sinus tumor years ago, a different NSAID, aspirin, seemed to have that effect of bleeding. We gave it as needed, for the pressure was too hard on him sometimes. His grew to deform his face, but he loved life. I cannot remember if he was on any steroids. The occasional bleeding would have been hard to manage while keeping a nice house if he had not spent so much time lounging outdoors that fine summer.

With other dogs, I found steroids gave a beautiful respite from tumors and we had time to say goodbye. With other dogs and cats, other medical issues made giving steroids impossible.

I am sorry this is hard. I do think that you are correctly assessing the situation as a nonemergency one. Hard to say through the keyboard. If he is content, please get some rest yourself. You are doing what you can.

Giving Rimadyl with steroids is not recommended. NSAID's given with steroids can cause severe gastric ulcers.

    Thanks guys.
Nope-I don't wanna give him Rimadyl WITH the steroids, Dr. Steve already explained to me that that is not an option. It's either or. And so now we've got 1 full day plus this mornings dose and although he's acting good, eating and being with us, he's not initiating much play as he was while he was on the steroids.
Yes you could be right-maybe the tumor is just growing, pressing...so its hard to tell if switching is going to help but at this point what have I got to lose?
Charlotte K.....your friends dog had bleeding from his nose while on the aspirin? I know that is a symptom of the tumor in the sinuses, but Montana's not had much of that until this, aside from the initial bloody nose that came just prior to the visual bump of the tumor.
Anyway....I am at work now, vet doesn't open until after I get in, so I'll call at 4 when I get out.
Roller coaster this is. I just want my baby to feel good.
He woke me up at 5am this morning with a cold wet nose under my blanket. lol he had just gotten a drink of water I could hear him and he made a beeline right into my room. As i lay under the blankets I smiled because I know he's looking for me & sure enough he moved the blanket with his nose, dripping cold water all across my face. Laughed myself right outta bed.
Anyway, keep the mojo coming please...hoping I an get my hands on more of that dex. & praying it works magic like last week.

    I love the good moments!

Yes, there was greatly increased bleeding while on the aspirin for a short time. Looked like a slasher movie happened at his dog bed, wall, etc.

Good luck with the call to the vet. Dex should be available, if it is right for his whole situation. It is a hospice situation, so whatever works. Is there a pain med that won't interact as much with the dex? I like that steroids are a chemotherapy, often decreasing the size of tumors or keeping them from increasing for a while. While they hold, they are wonderful. We used them for a Lab who was finally diagnosed with probable hemangiosarcomas twining throughout the inside of his body; we got the holiday times with him, a blessed 6 weeks. For other dogs, only a couple weeks instead of a couple days. The only thing is, with work, can you cope with the increased need to drink and urinate on the steroids? Or can you have a dog walker come in?

    You are in my prayers.

oh dear....seeing "6 weeks" scares me. While I know it's only palliative treatment, I guess to actually think it could be only weeks is tough. I guess to be honest, I was hoping that since the dex. was working so well I was hoping maybe it could continue for months.....no matter. I am going to do whatever I can at this point. I've known all along there'd be no cure. I am not willing to let him go right now though because I feel with the dexamethasone that he can enjoy more time. And I can too, with him. Thank you for the prayers, I really appreciate them. I have to say it makes me angry that we've gone all this time with no change in that tumor & then bang out of nowhere it blew up that day. Now I can see that it is slightly bigger than in months prior, so it is growing now....the bleeding last night was a bit crazy, still nothing I cant handle if he can be feeling well with medicine.
Well I work only 5 minutes away, so there could be times that I can slip home to take him out OR there's always the puppy pads. I don't mind them at all if he will use them when he needs to. But-when he was on the dex last week at 2 pills a day he was still holding it, not freaking out...at 3 pills a day he was having a tough time & at that level I'd need to figure something out simply to avoid him being upset about not holding it. Does that make sense?
