Sorry, no experience with any of our seniors. What does the vet say?
Does anyone have any experience with this? Moby, my 13 year old lab, sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night choking and gagging like he has lots of phlegm in his throat. After a bit - he settles down. This has been going on for a few years - and does not happen all the time. Any ideas?

I'd consult a vet, especially since he is a senior. Unfortunately coughing can also be a sign of heart disease. When was the last time he had a full physical exam?

we have it with jake and i suspect LP (not GOLP which seems to include weakness with hind end). i was just at the vet yesterday and he heard it and agreed. but at that old age……not horrible, i think. my guy just turned 12.
but i would let the vet check and listen to his heart, as elayna said.
He had a full check up on April and they said his heart was like a young dog. And he has had this quite some time. I was just wondering if it was a normal old dog thing.

My Harley would do this occasionally - maybe once a week. I took him to the vet who wanted to listen to his heart. Nothing unusual was found. Five weeks ago, Harley would not get up. The vet put him on Lasix and said his heart was failing. Harley died 6 days later. I am telling you my story because I have wished 1000 times that I had asked our vet to do an EKG or echo, or blood test to 100% rule out heart disease. We had no warning until the clinical signs of fluid retention in the abdomen & lungs presented. Please ask your vet to RULE OUT heart disease. I wish I had
Prayers.
It sounds like Laryngeal Paralysis, which is very common in senior Labs. Please consult your Vet.

Most likely Laryngeal Paralysis, Hudler has it and does the same thing. But you do have to rule out things like heart disease and heart worms, which can also cause the coughing. A senior exam should clear that right up. Nothing you can do but keep the dog calm and cool.

Our senior, Loki, also does this. The vet couldn't find anything the matter. Gosh, I hope it isn't heart disease or laryginal paralysis! He goes to the vet on Wednesday, because he is losing his hair. I don't think that is related to this.
