I am so sorry for the sense of helplessness and loss that you are feeling. I have been there many times. It is never easy. My only advice would be to make sure you and your vet have an understanding that you don't want to be premature in putting your baby down, but YOU DON'T want to wait too long and have your pet suffer. Prayers and thoughts with you, your family, and Smokes.

It's terrible watching our beloved pets getting older, then get a protracted illness. The last act of love for our pets is the greatest we can do for them. I agree to have a good talk with your vet. They have been thru this many times and look at it from the animal's point of view instead of our emotional one. The day to early vs too late is true, I think because I was too late with my Cracker and the guilt was horrible.

Sending heartfelt hugs and thoughts for wise decisions.

I am so sorry you are going thru this. Both my labs are seniors ( little did I realize the effects of their being the same age..back then)
I'm having a lot of trouble with Montana lately(sinus tumor) and it causes breathing issues too but only before he lays on his side to sleep) When he's up and around his breathing is good. I've been thinking about the same things you are lately and I've come to realize that while Montana is being picky with his eating-he is eating all of his food when it is something he can smell well. He gets tired but when we're just around the house its ok-we can play when he wants to & rest when he wants to. No house potty issues yet but I have decided that these are the things that will determine when it is time. When he wont eat ANYthing. When he cant get comfortable or breathe comfortably. When he no longer plays at all. When he tells me. And he has not said so yet. I know people say (and I do agree) its better to be NOT late with the decision, but I wont be too early either Montana does have times when he seems sad, but then I can get him up & playing or smiling & I know then that its not quite time yet. We played soccer yesterday -a game he has always loved & it made me realize that its ok . For now.
Good luck with your decision. And prayers & good thoughts for you at this time

Thank you so much. We have good days and not as good days. I am like you, don't want to see him suffer, but not too soon yet. He has always been vocal, but now I don't know if he doesn't know what he wants? He will come up to me and stare, then bark or keep on that he wants something, but sometimes cannot figure it out. Then I think it is all in my imagination....

    Thank you!

    Sending positive thoughts your way....

I have an 11 year old, going to be 12 in July, a 9 year old cat, going to be 10 in July, and I just lost Max, a 9 year old... Would have been 10 in March.

Max... He developed lung cancer. Two months before his death, never had a thought that he'd be going first. Sammy is going pretty good for his age. So is the cat.

We also have Chihuahua/Miniature Dachshund mix... He's abt 2 years old.
Sammy (5 Jul 2003 - present) Labrador Retriever - Black
Seven - Gotcha (Jun 2014 - present) Chihuahua/Miniature Dachshund mix
    Rainbow Bridge: Max (23 Mar 2005 - 11 Dec 2014) Labrador Retriever - Yellow

Sending prayers of strength that you will be able to do the right thing at the right time. Not trying to say what that is, because only you and your vet will be able to make that decision, but prayers that you have the strength to do it. For us, it was when appetite fell off a cliff.

I looked in your past posts and see that Smokes did pass away. I want to belatedly let you know I am sorry for your loss. I have mostly seniors now too and it is very hard. When you need it in the future, there are quality of life scales for dogs that are quite good. Just google it. Take care.

So sorry. We lost 2 this year. One in March and one in October. It's hard to decide for them, but we really kept in mind the thought about if they can't do any of the top three things they loved to do, it probably is time to help them cross.
