    Curious on Food For Senior

I have a 10.5 year old female who I have been feeding Wellness Core for several years and am thinking she is losing interest in it.. she is also supplemented daily with hylasport canine, 1000 mg of vit c, grizzly salmon oil and now have added around 800-1000 ie of vit e about 3-4 days a week. My 1 yr old is on a Fromm 4 star rotation (currently trying the pork and applesauce) and she seems interested in that too.. I was just curious of what food everyone actually uses for their seniors...

Same food as when they were young. Maybe less of it if weight gain is a problem but it never was for us. If your older girl seems to be losing interest it might be a health concern with her, maybe teeth? Or sometimes folks have found the food manufacturer changed something and did not put it on the label and it puts the dog off.

That's a lot of Vitamin E, did your Vet ok that? Our own human doctor recommended my OH lower his IU to 200 a day, which would be much less for his weight than your dog is getting and she must weigh a lot less. Google it up, too much Vit E can be responsible for thin blood, poor clotting, and injury outside or internal might result in excessive blood loss.

My seniors get the same as they always did (which at the moment is Taste of the Wild, Sierra Mountain formula but in the past has been the Royal Canin Lab formula). Mulder, at 15.5 was recently found to be low-grade anemic, so he also gets fresh cooked beef in with his food (which improved his anemia). We do cut back as the activity levels drop.

We home seniors and about 1 1/2 years ago I switched to Fromm, four varieties in rotation; about two months per rotation. The seniors do very well on it. In fact, the whitefish actually helped Mardi lose weight over last winter. She has limited mobility and being winter there was not a great amount of exercise. The whitefish has less calories. With each variety, she is fed less with salt free green beans, canned or frozen as a filler. She also gets fruit for treats.

My only advice is NOT to feed a Senior formula food to your senior.

You want to make sure your senior gets enough protein...maybe cut back a little on the portions if she is not as active.

You don't want her to gain weight...it is important to keep a senior as fit as possible.

We really like the Nutrisource line of food.

My senior girl gets the same as my younger dog as well. Both eat grain free foods and I rotate between 5 different brands and protiens. We use Fromm, Wellness Core, Farmina, Infinia and Earthborn. Fortunately mine are not bothered by food changes in any way. They also eat lots of fruits and veggies, homemade chicken jerky and a weekly raw turkey neck. I agree with not feeding a senior formula food.

I think it is very important not to feed the same food constantly, if possible, once they are done growing.

Also Fromm - Adult Gold, with an occasional switch to duck or another Fromm variety. I considered switching Truffles to the senior formula, but talked with our local feed store about it and decided to stick with regular adult food. Never feed any grain and we always buy quality treats, and, most importantly, everything made in the USA.

Same brand as always. We feed Native. Only thing is we switched him to Level 1 (from Level 2) when he got older. He is ten. Our dogs all do well on this brand and it isn't super, super expensive.

We always give the older dogs the same food. If yours seems to be interested in the Fromm's, give them that. Grace has gotten picky with kibble and some she likes and some she doesn't. I also think it's a lot of Vit. E. I give 1 400 pill 3x a week.
