I would personally believe that feeding raw or fresh foods with tons of moisture would be BETTER for the kidney's; feeding a dry high protein based food is very hard on the kidneys....ever notice this day and age how many cats are in kidney failure.

I have a friend, poor lady, who didn't know back in her 3 cats younger days, that kibble was actually damaging to their kidney's because of how dry it is...in the last 3yrs, she's actually managed to save all 3 of her cats by switching them all to a raw diet. They're still in various stages of kidney issues, but they're healthier and still alive.

When my big guy was eating Orijen 6-fish, only one of 2 dry foods he could eat, he was drinking a ton of water.

Now that both pups are on a raw diet, I rarely see them drink any water - I generally have to add water to their meals, just wanting to make sure they are getting enough moisture.

High protein kibbles (grain free) should be fed with water added to aid in the digestion of the high protein.

My girl years ago that had KF from old age was fed a low phosphorous food that was 26% protein with added cooked meat or eggs and and a phosph binder (crushed egg shells) and she did fine on 26%.

Do the research. It is not high protein that is detrimental. It is poor quality protein that is because it is harder for the dog to digest and therefore harder on the kidneys. Corn based foods are one of the worst for KF.

Phosphorous is also a factor (must be low 1% or less) in KF dogs. Meat has phos. so when adding fresh meat you need to give a phos binder. This would go for raw fed dogs with KF too. even more so than processed kibble IMO.

I'll claim to be a novice when it comes to pet feeding. It used to be Costco food for our guys based on the price. However when my 1 1/2 year old Buddy developed 'Allergies' and diagnosed with a yeast overgrowth I started researching types of food and determined that RAW was the best way to go. Not quite ready take the plunge on that yet, I switched to the Orijen line rotating between their different versions. At first I was put off by the tales of a high protein being harmful but found the download from them very enlightening touching on a lot of the information talked about in the previous posts. Feeling much better now that I made the switch to Hi Protein and Grain Free.
