    Help with diarrhea

Well Montana seemed much better after his bout with diarrhea last week. I gave him some Hills ID and pumpkin and he was fine. Now today he's had it again. Very soft then liquid. Poor dog. And it's seeming to be because he's on all canned food now. I did read that too much pumpkin could do this but I have been giving him a tablespoon with each meal every day-- is this too much? I'm not sure how else I can manAge this for him. Suggestions please.

Could he have giardia? Is the diarrhea very stinky; once you've smelled a poo with giardia you'll never forget.

Don't think you are giving too much pumpkin unless in combination with the Hills ID it caused a problem. Can you back down to boiled hamburger or chicken and boiled rice?

I don't think it's giardia. I think it's too much canned food. I could try the boiled hamburger I'm not sure he'd eat rice though. Last time I had given him chicken he threw up. He's just not the same. Once upon a time he could eat anything. I guess pumpkin isn't a long term fix?

Pumpkin has a lot of fiber, and can give them the runs. When one of mine has loose poo issues, I stop feeding for 24 hours (vets advice), and start on a bland diet of rice and chicken, then work back into the regular diet. Usually within 48 hours we are back to normal.

Did you have stool sample checked for giardia and coccidia???? Like Fran said, the smell is horrible, and vet intervention may be needed to get through it.

So pumpkin cant/shouldn't be given daily?
There was no out of the ordinary smell. And this just happened since moving him to all canned food. I don't know....this morning I gave him boiled chicken & rice. But really-I cant give him this for every meal right? I mean its meant to just straighten them out I thought. I'm talking long term. If this diarrhea is form all canned food-what do I do?
This morning I also mixed in a few tablespoons of Dakotas DCO food -this stuff we get form the vet because Dakota had diarrhea for so long and no matter what we did we couldn't resolve it so the vet came to the conclusion that it was a food issue & we kept her on this and she has been great. Its fiber. I gave him a bit even though its dry he ate it. Just a bit though.
I did just buy them omega supplements from Dr. Foster & Smith. Maybe its that...? I have no idea. Last night though he went pretty normal then a few minutes later it was softer adn a few minutes later & it was very runny. Poor guy...I need to get him back on track with eating good before he loses weight...

I’ve used pumpkin daily for several months in the past with no issues. I usually gave more than you are, too - more like 2-3 heaping tablespoons.

So yesterday my husband got home before me & didn't check to see if Montana pooped when he took both dogs out. So I have no idea. I got home and fed them, gave Montana more rice..and he seemed fine, nothing the rest of the night. This morning I gave him his canned food & rice and he pooped and it was fine, little soft at the end but come on..its better than the other day....so maybe it was from the supplement I started giving them. He didn't get a lot of it but it seems the times he did get it he wound up some time later having diarrhea. Maybe I gave him too much canned food too. I gave hi a bit of Dakotas DCO with his rice & canned this morning too...I have no idea ...lets cross paws this is over. I cant have him losing weight and heading downhill. Just cant happen. On a side note we recently added ducklings to the mix and Montana LOVES to stalk them. He'd never hurt a fly but it sure is fun to watch him perk up and follow them, he gets so happy it melts my heart.

So I'm back. Montana has been great for the past week or so since I posted last. Poop's been formed not always firm but definitely not a problem either. I've had him on about a cup of Dakota's DCO fiber food along with a cup of rice and some canned. Well this morning there it was -began as pudding ended as formed. Weird right? I cant imagine wt h is going on. He is on Rimadyl so and they say any vomiting or diarrhea to stop use. I've not stopped use as the diarrhea has not been continuing. I added a bot more of the DCO still only about a fuller than average cup. I have been adding rice into his food for more than a week now I think and a good amount-is that a bad thing? I gave him a probiotic this morning after his outside bathroom time so hopefully that helps. Poor baby. He ate a few carrots yesterday which I was glad about because lately he hasn't wanted any.

Poor Montana can't catch a break.

Could the amount you're feeding be a little much? That might cause diarrhea.

I would definitely have a liver function blood test done with the Rimadyl. Might not be that but best to rule out all possibilities.
