    Degenerative disk in neck

Hi. One of our labs was just diagnosed with a degenerative disk in his neck. He is 10 1/2 years old. He is now on rest, rimadyl and muscle relaxers. He is doing much better than Friday,in which he really was hurting. The vet recommended laser treatment. Has anyone had this done for their lab?

We used laser therapy for Kimber after her spinal injury. I'm not sure if it helped but I can assure you it didn't hurt. It's worth a try.

He is getting better..doesn't hang his head low now and looks happier. I called the vet and they said 6 treatments for $230. We are considering it..

I think it was $120 for 3 treatments.

Yes, laser treatment (and physical therapy in general) helped Cookie enormously when he injured his back a few months ago.

Laser treatment is great for many things, but I would suggest acupuncture for a disc injury. My 3-year-old dog suffered a cervical disc injury last year. She was in so much pain. She can't take NSAIDs, so the emergency vet put her on Tramadol and a muscle relaxer. It did nothing for her pain. She didn't get relief until after the weekend, when I took her to the chiro vet and he put her on prednisone. She did get several laser treatments, but I think the meds did more to help her than the laser.

When it happened again about 3 months later, I discussed acupuncture with my regular vet. This was about a week after the onset of pain, and she told me that it works much better than the laser and the sooner after the injury you can do it, the better. I had already put Lily back on the pred and pain meds, and had several more laser treatments, when I saw my regular vet. Lily was not painful, so my vet did not do the acupuncture at that time, but if it happens again, I'll do that before the laser.

That is what the vet has recommended. We are trying 6 sessions and see how it goes.

I highly recommend the cold laser therapy. It works wonders and worth every penny!
